Sarah Cornelia Allen Manley Davidson, NC
Sarah Cornelia "Sally" Allen Manley, 93, passed away on September 24, 2012 at The Pines Health Care Center in Davidson, NC. A former resident of Naples, FL and Johnson City, TN, Mrs. Manley was predeceased by her husbands, Albert C. Romero of Norwalk, CT and Robert E. Manley of Naples, FL and Oil City, PA; and three brothers, Eric Jr., James B., and Benjamin Allen; and one sister, Patricia Allen Close.
She was born on July 1, 1919 in Bethel, CT, the daughter of Sarah C. Rogers Allen and Eric Reece Allen. Mrs. Manley graduated from Grove City College and taught French at the Daycroft School in Stamford, CT where she met her first husband. She taught kindergarten and first grade for many years in the Norwalk, CT school system, retiring in 1980, and was a director of Norwalk's Head Start Program.
She was an avid tennis player throughout her life, traveled extensively, and also authored several children's books, most notably 'Mr. Crispy's Story of the First Candy Canes.'
She is survived by two daughters, Sarah C. "Polly" Romero Salvati and her husband, Thomas of Limestone, TN, and Kathleen E. "Kim" Romero Handsman and her husband, Samuel of Cornelius, NC; six grandchildren, Lauren Gilbert, Christopher Grogan, Jonathan Grogan, Marnie Price, Eric and Paul Handsman; four great-grandchildren, Megan Gilbert, Selena and Luca Price, and Santiago Grogan; and nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Linda Tell of Boise, ID, Barbara Manley Townsend of Erie, PA, Robert Randolph Manley of Bell, FL; and step-grandchildren, Jason, Robert, Micah, Melissa and Laura Tell, and Alex and Adam Townsend.
No memorial service is planned.
The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to Camps Newfound and Owatonna, 4 Camp Newfound Road, Harrison, ME, 04040-9987 http://www.newfoundowatonna.com.
