Shirley Coffin Marks
Naples, FL
Shirley Coffin Marks died suddenly and unexpectedly on November 10, 2008 in Naples FL. She was the daughter of Bruce A. Coffin and Madeleine Sinclair Coffin and sister of the late Barbara Coffin Hobson. Mrs. Marks was born on April 17, 1935 and educated at the House in the Pines School and LaSalle College.
Of the things that mattered most to Shirley was her family. Shirley met her husband, James, with whom she shared 45 years of marriage based on the words of the poet "the best was always yet to be." She is survived by three children, Deborah Elizabeth Thompson and husband, David E. Thompson of Hamilton, MA, David Marks and wife, Audie of Coral Springs, FL and Kimberly Ann Marks of Marblehead, MA. She will be sorely missed by her beloved six grandchildren, David, Bruce and Madeleine Marks of Coral Gables, FL and Andrew, Colby and Tyler Bates of Marblehead, MA.
Shirley, an avid golfer and tennis player, was a member of the Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples and the Naples Yacht Club as well as the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA. Her generosity and selflessness were reflected in her charitable works and based on the philosophy, "to whom much is given, much is expected."
These included the Girls Club of Lynn, MA where she served as past director and vice president and the Junior Aid Society.
Shirley's artistic nature was manifested in the beautiful Nantucket baskets that she created after her many annual trips to the island. A showing was recently held at the Naples Yacht Club.
Services will be held at the Old North Church in Marblehead, MA on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Penny Bear Foundation, 26 Elmwood Road, Marblehead, MA 01945 or the charity of your choice.

Proust wrote people do not die for us immediately but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive. It is as though they were traveling abroad.
We will hold fast to the happy moments that we all shared at Kate's wedding in Manhattan.
Our deepest sympathy, Jim to you and the children and immense gratitude for a life well lived.
