Charles "David" Crosby, age 78, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025. His family takes comfort knowing he entered his eternal home in Heaven and was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
David was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 23, 1947, to the late Joseph "JL" Linton and Martelle Sauls Crosby. David was a member of Buford Grove Baptist Church. He spent several years as a skilled welder before a work injury ended his career. He was an avid Florida Gators fan and devoted much of his life to coaching and mentoring youth.
Over the years, he coached numerous Little League teams and the West Nassau High School softball team. David poured countless hours into maintaining the West Nassau High School softball and football fields. The softball field was named in his honor and just recently he was inducted into the West Nassau Hall of Fame.
He was an avid coon hunter who enjoyed a good poker game, loved to read, and found joy in listening to southern Gospel music –especially the Gaithers. David had a deep love of history, particularly the history of Nassau County and the Civil War era. David had genuine compassion for kids with special needs and always went out of his way to be a friend to them. Staten Dempsey was one of many that held a special place in his heart.
David's greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished every moment spent with them, sharing stories and making memories together.
David was preceded in death by his parents, JL and Martelle Crosby; his grandson, Christopher David Crosby, Jr.; his brother, Wayne Crosby; and his grandparents, Allen and Mary Sauls.
He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Sherrie DiMaria Crosby; his children, Chris (Barbara) Crosby, Tonya (Rodney) Butler, Scottie (Molly) Crosby, Heather (Darren) Hodges, Jason Crosby, Justin (Morgan) Crosby, and Kala (Clay) Gregory; his sister, Wanda (George) Barthelmes; 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held Friday, Nov. 7, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Buford Grove Baptist Church, with Pastor Jason Johns and Pastor Jeff Carter officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
