Birgit Enlund Myers passed away peacefully Friday August 25, 2023, at Maplewood Senior Living in Darien, Connecticut following a prolonged illness. She was a resident of New Canaan for over 50 years. Birgit (Inga-Birgit) was born in December 1932 to Birger (1885-1971) and Anna Maria (1903-1973) Enlund in Falun Sweden, where she grew up with her two sisters Inga-Marianne (1922-1975) and Inga-Britta (1926-1980) and brother Gunnar (1937-).
Despite the effects of the Great Depression and World War II, she spoke fondly of her early years: summers picking mushrooms and berries in the woods, and skiing in the winters. In 1952 her life changed forever when she met Tom Myers, a young American, at a dance on the island of Gotland. Two years later they married at Kopparbergs Church in Falun, across the street from her childhood home. Moving to the United States, Birgit and Tom set up their first home in Boston, where Tom was admitted to Harvard Business School (HBS). After a year at HBS, Tom fulfilled his military service in the U.S. Air Force at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, where Peter Enlund (1956-1973) was born. Returning to Boston and HBS, Thomas Jr. (1958-) was born. Tom's first job was with Colgate Palmolive International in New York, and the family lived in Short Hills, New Jersey, where James was born in 1959. The position with Colgate took the family on an international journey, first to England in 1960, and ultimately back to Sweden (1961-1964). In the fall of 1964, the family moved to the United States and New Canaan, CT, to the house where Birgit and Tom would reside for the next 56 years, and where they would have their fourth child, John (1967). During those years Birgit endeavored to raise the four "energetic"boys and imbue them with optimism, self-respect, an appreciation of others, and a deep love of all things Swedish. Family vacations back to Sweden were a wonderful time and an opportunity to reunite with extended family. Later travels with Tom and friends took them on some great adventures, but they always enjoyed returning home to New England. For the last few decades, Birgit and Tom spent their summers on Cape Cod with the Family, where she enjoyed taking in the sea air while reading her Swedish magazines. As the years passed, Birgit also embraced grand mothering, becoming "Farmor" for the new generation. In more recent years, Birgit resided at Maplewood Senior Living, where she and Tom were able to spend time together before his passing in 2021. She is remembered for her indomitable spirit and good cheer in the face of any challenge.
She is survived by her three sons: Thomas Jr., James, John, and their spouses, five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.
