Christopher Smith

Christopher V Smith, a longtime New Canaan resident and resident of Addison County, Vt, died at home on Sunday, July 7, after a long illness He was 71

Mr Smith was the son of Vernon S and Crosby T Smith of New Canaan

He was a 1957 graduate of New Canaan Country School, the Choate School, in 1960, and Middlebury College, in 1965 He worked in New York City for Irving Trust Co and its successor organization, Bank of New York, for 32 years before retiring in 1997

Mr Smith was a diehard sports fan, his family said, with particular affection for New England Small College Athletic Conference sports, the New York Mets, and the New York Rangers He was a generous, though anonymous, supporter of causes related to the environment, education of the disabled, community betterment, the Olympics, and veteran affairs

Mr Smith is survived by four brothers, Crosby Smith of Vero Beach, Fla, Dudley Smith of Grantham, NH, Jeremy Smith of West Roxbury, Mass, and Geoffrey Smith of San Francisco; and five nieces and three nephews

Burial services were conducted by the Rev Peter F Walsh of St Mark's Episcopal Church in New Canaan
