George Bantz Obituary

George Herman Bantz, former long-time resident of New Canaan, died Friday, May 12, 2017, in Wilmington, Del Born in New York City, in 1933, he was the son of the late William and Rose Bantz

George was predeceased by his cherished wife of over 61 years, Lillian Casey Bantz, and his youngest daughter, Eileen Marie Bantz A wonderful brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and role model, he is survived by one sister, Kate Ardsmond of South East Pacific, Washington, one son, William G Bantz, of Portland, Maine, and two daughters, Katherine A Kolb and her husband, Phillip Robert, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and Jeanne E Lazo-Wasem and her husband, Eric, of Redding Ridge, Conn His five grandchildren include Phillip George, Eric, Ian, Elizabeth and Emily His great-granddaughter is Ella

A graduate of Westchester Community College and Power Memorial High School, George was a talented mechanical engineer for over 45 years, and a founder, owner, and director for the Pallet Cover Machine Company, a company that developed custom automated manufacturing machinery He was instrumental in developing semiconductor manufacturing equipment and played a role in developing the fine guidance system of the Hubble Space Telescope while at the Perkin-Elmer Corporation He advanced the state of the art of mammography instrumentation at the LoRad Corporation

George's joys in life included spending time with his family and fishing and hunting with his son, his six brothers, and his many nephews He was a skillful builder of wooden model ships, an avid reader, especially of history, and loved classical music His favorite places to visit included the Catskill Mountains, the American Museum of Natural History and the Cloisters, in New York City He was a parishioner and former lector at St Aloysius Church

Contributions in his memory may be made to Friends of Good Shepherd School, 954 Lexington Avenue #252, New York, New York 10021-5013 George was an alumnus of this school A memorial service is being planned
