George Marshall Obituary

Orland, ME - George M Marshall Jr, 92, former resident of New Canaan, died on May 7, 2012 at his home on the shores of Alamoosook Lake George remained intellectually curious, an adventurous traveler, family genealogist, and a man with a big heart under the surface of his sea-worthy resolution until the last days of his life

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1919, George was inspired by his sea captain grandfather and went to sea at the age of 17 From 1938 to 1946 he served in the US Merchant Marine on ships operated by the United States Lines, American President Lines and American Export Lines before, during and after World War II, rising from deck cadet to US Coast Guard Master of unlimited ocean-going vessels He graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in the Class of 1942 In 1944, he was appointed to first command of the ship SS Charles Carroll at the age of 24, one of the youngest shipmasters to have served in the US Merchant Marine during World War II Captain Marshall completed his undergraduate degree at New York University During his business career he advanced to senior vice president of the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company in charge of the international insurance operations

While working in New York City George and his family resided in New Canaan, both on Harrison Avenue and Weed Street, in the early 1960s and again in the early 70s after working for six years as Presidente de Consejo for Union De Seguros, SAin Mexico City, Mexico Following early retirement he joined the staff at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine He served as special assistant to the superintendent as well as Director of Development, Director of Placement, Director of the Cadet Shipping Training Program, the First Director of the Center of Advanced Maritime Studies and Chairman of the Development Council Following his second retirement he served as a SCORE volunteer in both Bangor and Ellsworth offices

Captain Marshall was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Katherine Weaver Ebbert Marshall He is survived by his son, James Wainwright Marshall of Sonoma, CA, daughter, Katherine Marshall Greenman and son-in-law, John F Greenman of Old Town, ME; granddaughter, Margaret Greenman Burman, grandson-in-law, Michael A Burman and great granddaughters, Adeline Lillie and Calla Elizabeth of Saco, ME; and grandson, Gregory James Burnham Greenman of San Francisco, CA
