COLUMBUS: Rudolph Melvin "Rudy" Stern, Jr., age 87, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at The Zusman House.
Born April 10, 1923 in Toledo, Ohio.
Preceded him in death were his parents, Rudolph M. Stern, Sr. and Malvina Stern; and his beloved first wife, Shirley Solomon Stern, with whom he spent 53 wonderful years; his older sister, Harriet Schiff (Leonard); and younger brother, Sanford Stern (Hilda).
Rudy is survived by his loving wife, Mary Joel Gleeson Stern; son, Robert H. Stern of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Nancy Stern Lipson (Ira) of Dallas, Texas; grandsons, Scott Kriegshaber of Brooklyn, New York and Evan Kriegshaber of Nashville, Tennessee; step-sons, Stephen Gleeson (Susan) of Newark, Ohio and Joe Gleeson (Marilyn) of Richmond, Indiana; step-daughter, Beth Snelling-Stewart of Phoenix, Arizona; step-grandchildren, Ryan Ghiloni-Gleeson, Lanie Gleeson, and Piper Gleeson all of Richmond, Indiana, Patrick Gleeson of Newark, Ohio, Trevor Hicks (Moena) of Japan, Virgil Hicks of Salem, Arkansas, Jacob Snelling of Newark, Ohio, and Jillian Stewart of Columbus, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Rudy attended Bexley High School and graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute where he lettered in football and basketball. He attended the Ohio State University, while there he was a member of the Sophomore Men's Honorary, until leaving to serve his country as a member of the United States Army. Upon returning from WWII, Rudy worked in his parents business, the Rudolph Stern Dress Company until his father retired. In 1960, Rudy became a well-known and respected realtor on the eastside of Columbus for over 40 years. He was one of the first Chairman of the Multiple Listing Committee of the Columbus Board of Realtors and taught many classes for new agents. He was a member of the Ohio State Alumni Association, B'nai B'rith, Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, and was an active member of Temple Israel for over 50 years. He was also a supporter of many charitable causes, among them the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He was an avid reader for several years, and also volunteered his time at the Franklin Park Conservatory.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Temple Israel, 5419 E. Broad St. Rabbi Misha Zinkow officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Temple Israel Section. Family will be observing Shiva from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Saturday at the Rudolph Stern residence.
