Mary Garrett Brown (Mert) entered into Heaven to be with her beloved husband Jacob in the early morning hours of January 23, 2021. Mert was surrounded by the love, thoughts, and prayers of her family and friends at the time of her passing. Mary was 96 years young and resided at Spring Arbor Assisted Living of Leesburg Virginia.

Mary was born to Elwood Hoops Garrett and Hannah Darlington Levis Garrett and grew up in Swarthmore Pennsylvania. Mary graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Allied Medicine with a degree in occupational therapy. Mary married Jacob Embree Brown Sr (Jake), a US Naval aviator and senior Avon executive. They were married for 49 years at the time of his passing in 1997. Mary and Jacob settled in Newark Delaware where she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mary is survived by her three children, Deborah Brown Roach of Florida, Jacob Embree Brown Jr. of California, and Rebecca Brown Bruno of Virginia, and her grandson Jacob Garrett Bruno.

Mary had unlimited energy, in addition to working at the Delaware Curative Workshop she loved participating in and watching sports, raising three children (as well as the neighborhood kids), loving her Golden Retrievers, power walks around the neighborhood, sailing the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay, antiquing, gardening, knitting and needlepoint, playing Bridge, traveling, baking, her neighbors, her Quaker faith and Friends meeting, and volunteer work.

Mary served as a guide at the Winterthur Museum, delivered Meals-On-Wheels (she finally stopped because "everyone I deliver meals to is younger than I am"), a reading tutor at the West Park Elementary School, as an Overseer at the Wilmington Friends Meeting and as a board member to develop the new Newark Senior Center. She was also very active with the arthritis foundation for many years.

A memorial service to celebrate Mary Brown's life will be held at the Spencer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place Newark Delaware with the date to be determined (due to the Corona-19 Virus). Mary will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Jacob at the Hockessin Friends Meeting.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson's or Alzheimer's foundations of America.
