I recently visited the Alumni Gym at Dartmouth and learned of James' passing. I ran with and rebounded for James in 1975; he was certainly one of the best athletes I ever knew. His infectious grin and energy have been with me ever since and will now be with me evermore. Rest easy.

I was saddened to hear of Jimmys passing. He is a great example to our youth and always was. I'm honored to know him and proud to have lived and watched him develop in the community during our formative years. I coached a high school basketball team with James a few years ago at the local YMCA. My favorite part of coaching with James was his gift of inspiring others. He focused on the weakest of all the players and magically transformed them with just the right words and teaching skills.

To James and Christian, Cobb Family
I joined the Stamford High family during James "junior" senior year. I was the running backs coach. Before the season started I was given a briefing of returning players and learned of a student named james cobb he turned out to be a pleasant well mannered young man. but above it all he was very intelligent. I was impressed because its rare to find combination that james junior had. which was humble respect and loyalty and committed. Then one day I was formally introduced to his father. And I said to myself ok i get it now. COACH as I would soon call him was a classic high intregity man. we soon became friends outside of football. James would help anyone if he was able. His door was open. I was well younger than Coach and for me i viewed him as a father figure for me as he was for many others im sure. I would seek counsel from coach about life. James reintroduced me to my lord and savior after inviting me to visit his church when i was seeking answer for myself. I looked up to coach cobb A true gentleman and his influence on sports and more imporantly life in stamford will stand the test of time. My condolences and thanks coach. to the Cobb family. To Gary and the Cobb Family:

I was a Catholic High guy but as a kid I idolized Jimmy and the rest of the guys on the Senior Babe Ruth team that won the World Series. Nothing made me more proud - to this day - than representing the city with STAMFORD across my chest when my turn came because I knew what Jimmy and the guys before me had accomplished. I never had the fortune of playing with Jimmy but I was a teammate of Gary's and had the chance to coach Michael on Robustelli Travel. I also remember watching Jimmy and the rest of the Black Knights in football in the glory days.
My condolences and thanks for such memories to the Cobb family.

To the Cobb Family
what a great father, son, brother, uncle, nephew & mentor James was. I was always touched by Mr Cobb as a young man growing up in Stamford. I played for his baseball team Garry Cobb Lions and I must say he instilled the confidence within me to succeed in all area's of life. Many times as a young man playing baseball at Scalzi park in Stamford Ct., James would work with my batting and encouraged me to continue to strive for the best. I will be forever grateful for his leadership and mentorship towards me. He always believed in me. To God be the glory he has an angel.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Cobb Family. I just heard about Jimmy's passing today and my heart is heavy. We were just talking about him last week.

My cousin was here last week for a funeral, in our family, and we looked through the Stamford High School year book. We turned to the football section, there was Jimmy, we turned to the baseball section, there was Jimmy, last but not least we turned to the basketball section, there was Jimmy again with the smile that would light up a room. What an all-star and a very nice person.

Rest in peace my dear friend, rest in peace.

August 10, 2012

There was an essential kindness and decency to Jimmy. As a captain of the state championship football team, an ivy league graduate of Dartmouth, a long-term public school teacher, and someone of exceptionally strong spiritual beliefs, he was, in so many ways, a role model for others and truly the best among the whole lot of us. Besides that, he was always just so much fun. Over the years following our graduation from high school, the times I spoke to him were almost like speaking with a psychologist, as he seemed to have a depth of wisdom particularly when he spoke about the young people he always taught and mentored. I was so impressed once when he told me that, whenever people asked him how he handled his students in Greenwich who came from such a dramatically different and more affluent background than experienced in his own childhood, he replied that these so-called entitled kids weren't less deserving of understanding and help as they didn't have any fewer challenges than he had had, only challenges of a different kind. The fact that his daughter graduated Harvard Law and his oldest son graduated Columbia and the Sorbonne in Paris is a towering testament to the depth of understanding that he had of the young people to whom he so thoughtfully dedicated his life. Good luck, Jimmy.
