Richard C. Schmaltz
BRISTOL
Richard C. Schmaltz, 72, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2025 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut after a battle with cancer. Rick faced his illness with the same determination and love that defined his life. His greatest motivation was his family -especially his beloved wife, Sheryl, and their son Nicholas - for whom he fought every step of the way. He dedicated his life to ensuring Nicholas always felt loved, cared for, and included in every way possible. Rick was born on June 25, 1953, in Hartford, to his parents Richard Schmaltz Sr. and Mary DeFelippi. He attended Bristol Eastern High School, where he first developed his love of football. Rick was a proud graduate of the University of Maryland, where his passion for the game shone brightly. His remarkable performance on the field led to his induction into the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame - an honor he cherished deeply. He often spoke fondly of his teammates, the lifelong friendships he made, and the lessons those years taught him about teamwork and perseverance. After college, he continued to share his love of sports with his community, serving as an Umpire for the Town of Southington and coaching Wolcott Youth Football, where he shared his love of the game with young athletes. Rick is survived by his loving wife Sheryl D'Onforio-Schmaltz, his son, Nicholas C. Schmaltz; and his daughter, Ashley Testa. He leaves behind his brother, Michael Schmaltz (Celeste), and his sister, Linda Fox. He is also survived by his in-laws, Robert and Teresa D'Onofrio, who were a constant source of love and support. He also, leaves behind his sisters-in-laws, Gina Ursini (Mark), Dawn D'Onofrio (Thomas), and Renee D'Onofrio (Jamie Bigham). He also leaves behind his cherished nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his parents Richard Schmaltz Sr., and Mary DeFelippi.
