On Sunday, the 18th of July, 2021, the greater New Milford area lost a longstanding pillar of integrity, professionalism, and kindness. Patriarch of his family, Franklin George Benham Jr., loving husband and father of four, passed away peacefully, comforted by his wife Lois, at the age of 90. Frank was born on the 8th of June, 1931 in Bridgeport CT to Franklin G. and Jean Benham. After graduating from Stratford High School in 1950, and prior to serving in the U.S. Navy, Frank married the love of his life and childhood sweetheart, Lois S. Scott on the 5th of January, 1952. Soon after, he was deployed at sea throughout 1952 and 1953. The couple celebrates nearly 70 years of devotion, achievements and happiness.
Throughout his time in New Milford, Frank became well known by the local community. He was a co-owner of the former Morey's IGA, later known as M&B IGA which he owned and operated from 1969 until his retirement and closure of the market in 2005. He also served on the advisory board for New Milford Bank and Trust as well as worked closely with the Women's Club of Greater New Milford, supporting the organization by personally donating food and hosting annual food drives to prepare Thanksgiving meal baskets for families in need. During retirement, he spent his time relaxing and enjoying his expanding family. He was fortunate to watch his grandchildren grow, and start families with children of their own. Residing on Upland Rd. in New Milford from 1983 until 2016, Frank and Lois relocated for warmer weather, and to be with family in South Carolina.
He was predeceased by his father Frank Sr., mother Jean, daughter Carol and son-in-law Thomas Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife Lois, daughter Cheryl Mitchell of Surfside Beach, SC, son and spouse Franklin L. Benham and Marcie Smith of New Milford, CT, son and spouse Darrin and Jenifer Benham of Warren, CT. He also leaves behind two sisters, Frances McClure and Janet Scott both residing in New Milford, CT. He was the proud Grandpa of five grandchildren, Michelle Klepaki of Seminole, FL, Tiffany Cooley of Ridgefield, CT, Ryan Mitchell of Murrells Inlet, SC, Brett Benham of New Hartford, CT, and Kelly Benham of Warren CT, as well as six great-grandchildren.
Grandpa, you blessed our whole family with your knowledge, guidance and patience. You taught us what it means to be humble and how to be grateful. We will deeply miss your calm and kind spirit, your fairness and unconditional love. You leave behind nothing but the most fulfilling memories and greatest family members we could have ever asked for. Rest easy grandpa, we love you!

I have known Big Frank since 1973, serving with his son Frank in the Navy. He and Lois took me in as one of their own ever since. When I Married in 75 they took in my Wife Donna as well. But this was the kind of person he and Lois are. He has made a lasting impression on me personally and with my family, always being generous to all. You might be gone Big Frank, But never forgotten. Our deepest love and prayers to the whole family. Bob & Donna Thomas

I'm so sorry to hear the passing of Frank. I worked at the IGA many years and Frank took me under his arm like I was part of the family. He showed me some cooking skills and chopping skills so I wouldn't hack a finger off in the kitchen. He was a great guy!! I will never for get him. Rest Easy Frank. My thoughts go out the the rest of the family

What a beautifully written tribute to a wonderful man! I was just thinking about him the other day and what a joy it was to stop into M&B IGA after work to pick up a few things in a great space. It was not just a store, it was a community gathering space, and Frank and his family made it that way. Rest peacefully, Frank. A life very well lived.
