Catherine Alves

MIDDLETOWN - Catherine (Davis) Alves - Born to Helena L. Davis and Andrew Davis of Portsmouth, RI on November 23, 1923. After high school, Catherine worked at the Torpedo Station, on Goat Island, in Newport until marrying John F. Alves of Middletown in June 1942.
Catherine and her husband, John moved to Middletown and had a daughter, Catherine L. Alves. The family grew again in 1987 when they welcomed a granddaughter Patricia. John and Catherine were so happy to have a granddaughter and loved her dearly, she was the light of their lives.
Catherine, known as "Kay" by her friends, went to work for General Electric on Thames Street in Newport when her daughter entered first grade. Kay retired from General Electric after thirty two years when the plant has closed on December 1, 1983.
Shortly after retiring from G.E., Kay and John bought a motor home and decided to do some traveling to New York and then to visit their nephew's and wives in Maryland and Pennsylvania, staying at each place for a month at a time.
Then one year they decided to go to Missouri and stopped by Pennsylvania to pick up Kay's brother Andrew and his wife Carroll to visit some friends. The friends once were tenants in the Alves house in Portsmouth. On their way back home, the group decided to visit the Gateway Arches and went through them on their way back to Rhode Island. Kay and John enjoyed their motor home and would be on the road almost every weekend until it was sold shortly after John passed away in June 1998.
Kay enjoyed many crafts like knitting, cross-stitch pictures, that she gave to her daughter and granddaughter most of the time. She also shared a love for crossword puzzles and reading books.
Kay is survived by her daughter Cathy Ardito of Middletown, and her granddaughter Patricia Schons of Mechanicsburg, PA.
She was preceded in death by her son in law, Donald Ardito,
Retired Chief, Middletown Fire Department, and a brother Andrew J. Davis. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and everyone who came in contact with her.
A special thank you to all of her caregivers during the last months of Kay's life. We could not have kept her at home if it wasn't for all of you. We would like to thank all of the Southcoast Visiting Nurses, Hospice Nurses and the therapist as well. We couldn't have done any of this without your assistance. We love you all and appreciate everything you did to keep Mom comfortable.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018, at 8:30 from the Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 in Jesus Saviour Church, 507 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery.
In Kay's memory, donations may be sent to the Middletown Fire Station on 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to the Potter League for Animals at 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI 02842, in honor of her cat Maddie.
