Cyrus Benson Obituary

Who was Cy Benson? A loving husband to Miriam; a devoted dad to Cy, Tom, Bob, and Bill; a lifelong educator and coach; and a man who brought warmth and compassion to every encounter. Cy was born in Brooklyn, NY, the only son of Cyrus and Ellen Benson and died at home on February 19, 2023, after a brief illness. In between those two events, there was lots of living and loving. Cy's life and passions are defined by consistent themes: family, education/coaching, and relationships. He was a gifted athlete, beginning at an early age in Babe Ruth baseball (coached by his future father-in-law William C. Fitts, Jr.), but football was the sport that dominated - threading through his 87 years. His last trip was to UPenn to cheer on the Quakers football team, which his son Bob coaches. Cy grew up in Mamaroneck, NY, and graduated from F.E. Bellows High School in 1953, where he exhibited strong leadership skills and excelled (and focused) more on the football field than the classroom. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he played Ivy League basketball and football and forged life-long friendships. He graduated in 1957 with a BA and worked briefly in corporate America as a sales representative for IBM. His career was interrupted by a call to serve in the United States Air Force as an Instructor Navigator for two years of active service. He was honorably discharged from the reserve in 1970. During his active service in the Air Force, Cy took an important leave to return to Mamaroneck in the summer of 1960 to marry Miriam Fitts, with whom he treasured sixty-two years of married partnership. In 1962, Cy earned his master's in education from Springfield College in Massachusetts and launched his life-long teaching/coaching career at Monmouth Regional High School in New Jersey. His career success brought him and his quickly growing family to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom in 1970. Buying an old, fixer-upper farmhouse on a hill in Morgan, VT, Cy built his life around his family (now 4 sons and Miriam) and the community where he lived and worked. He integrated his love of sports and teamwork into a value system and lifestyle that respected everyone - students, colleagues, neighbors, friends, and extended family. Like all successful competitors, he wanted to win, but not at any cost. More important to him were integrity, hard work, collaboration, and a can-do attitude. He greeted and acknowledged everyone he met - and made them feel seen and understood. He had charisma, for certain. It may sound like a cliche, but folks literally "lit up" when Cy walked in a room, restaurant, or store. He made friends with everyone. Valuing consistency and loyalty, he found change difficult and at times was seen as stubborn and inflexible. Career-wise, he progressed from coach and classroom teacher to administrator: for more than 10 years at North Country Union High School in Newport, VT, in various supervisory roles; for 6 years as Headmaster at Lyndon Institute in Lyndon, VT; and then returning to North Country Union H.S. for 5 years as Co-op Education Coordinator, Adult Services Administrator and coaching the football team to a state championship! In 1994, Cy worked for the Vermont Department of Corrections as a Reparative Board Facilitator, still focused on helping young people by offering alternative sentencing to first time offenders. He continued his involvement in education until his retirement in 1988. During his long career, Cy received many accolades and honors, including Lyndonville, VT Citizen of the Year in 1987 and Administrator of the Year in 1988. Life-wise, Cy and Miriam focused on raising their four active and gifted sons, who excelled in sports and academics, each with unique talents and personalities. Cy was predeceased by his granddaughter Hope Alexander Benson and his son Thomas Fitts Benson. He is survived by Cy and Jessica Benson; Bob and Juli Benson; and Bill and Nancy Benson. In addition, he leaves his beloved grandchildren: Nicholas, Connor, Kaylyn, Luke, and Liam. The family is appreciative of the kindness and concern shown by Cy's many friends. In lieu of other memorial gifts, please send donations to BAYADA Hospice, 316 Main Street, Unit EH-6, Norwich, VT 05055. When I started work at the North Country Career Center in 1990 the first staff member I met was Cy Benson. He walked up to me and said "there are only two Robert Fitts in this world and one is my brother in law and the other is my son Robert Fitts Benson so who are you?" He was very curious about me, my family and my background because of the name. We immediately hit it off, as Cy did with most people he met, and he became a true trusted friend and mentor. Whenever I needed advice or counsel Cy was always there for me, even after he retired. I am truly sorry to hear of Cy's passing. He was a fine gentleman, family man, educator, coach. Thanks for all you did for so many in the NEK.

I was sad to hear of Cy's passing. Cy hired me for my first job at North Country Union Junior High and for that I will be forever grateful. He was welcoming and kind. We both were Springfield College Grads and had many happy conversations sharing our athletic adventures. May he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Cy's passing. He was Principal at NCUHS at a time when I was working with troubled teens. I will never forget Cy's willingness to bend to help kids. More than once, I offered a suggestion, and Cy's response was always, "If you think it will work, we'll try it." Cy was a fine man and a terrific leader.

I only knew Cy for a short time but boy am I glad I met him. He and Miriam were my favorite guests at Ariana´s Restaurant in Lyme, N.H. They were as gracious as they come, full of charm, wit and compassion. What a lovely addition to a world that can at times feel so senseless.

Cy, you will be deeply missed by so many. Many memories from my childhood as part of the NCUHS pack, commanding the football field, cold Ivy League games in Hanover.... You and Miriam were true friends when my Dad needed you most after Mom died. I loved your drop in visits as you passed the house on your bike rides, our "friendly" games in the back yards, and your genuine "tell me what is going on in your life" chats and hearing the love in your voice as you filled us in on the "boys" and their families. It was also clear - and touching - that your eyes still saw Miriam as your "bride" so many years later. Hugs and love to you Miriam, Cy, Bob and Bill and all of the family. What an astounding life he lived. He was principal when I was attending North Country High School. I can still picture him, in his gray suit, standing in the hallway when the bell to change classes would sound. He would stand by the corner outside his office, smiling and greeting us as we passed. He was truly one of a kind. RIP "Mr. Benson," and thank you for being part of our youth. May your family be comforted knowing your positive impact on so many lives.

I enjoyed following Cy's snowshoe trails in the hilly woods behind our then-home in Morgan. He and Miriam were vigorous out there, and it was fun to follow the ribbons he used to mark those paths through the quiet snowy paths.

I can´t recall ever hearing a discouraging word from Cy, dating back to his earliest days in Morgan, or later as we´d sometimes meet in later years. He may well have heard cussing from me, carrying those bricks, boards and other heavy materials, as he was the foreman and I the gopher in his home construction project up on Sunset Hill; he always seemed to have calming words to sooth the aches and pains of this young sophomore.

Warm regards, Miriam and your boys, at this time of sadness.

My condolences to your family. Mr. Benson was an incredibly generous and kind man. I was a student at NCUHS in the late 1980´s. If it was not for him, my single mother of 3 would not have been able to help get me into college. He helped us through every step. I loved hearing his stories about his sons and their accomplishments. Thank you for sharing him with so many young people who I am sure looked up to him in so many ways. May he rest in peace.

I am very sad to hear about Cy. He was my principal when I was teaching at NCUHS, and I appreciated his leadership and support. He and I were both coaching Little League at the same time, and we feared going against his Morgan team as we knew we'd lose; which we did. I touched base with him when he was at Lyndon when I was there with the NC track team, and it was always great to catch up. The last time I saw him was when I landed my hot air balloon in his back yard in Morgan. RIP Cy.

Dear Miriam, Cy, Bob, Bill and family,
I grew up with Cy and your family in Morgan, VT. Cy coached my little league team and I became close to him. He installed confidence in me even though I was the only girl on the boy's baseball team and I made it all the way to the All Stars. I was happy to see Cy in the hallways at NCU and always gave him a hug. He looked out for me and I saw him as a father figure. Thank you all for always being nice to me and my family. Thank you Cy for being the kind, generous and loving man that you were. You will never be forgotten. Thoughts and prayers sent to all of you. Love, Robin McMullen Scott

I had Mr. Benson as principal while I attended North Country Union High School. He was a straight shooter but always fair. He always had a smile on his face and was very invested in his students. He could be seen at the "Four Corners" talking to students. He was a great educator and principal. My sincere condolences to his family.
