Kenneth Luke McLaughlin passed peacefully on September 5, 2021 at Watson Fields in Dover N.H.
He was born in Montreal, Canada on March 17, 1936 to Luke and Florence (Wright) McLaughlin. The family moved to Island Pond, VT in 1939, where Ken became friends with Ralph Dodge in first grade. They would remain best friends for 80 years.
Ken graduated from Brighton High School in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. At the end of his service, he returned to Vermont and enrolled in UVM, later transferring to Johnson State Teachers College, where he graduated with a teaching degree. He first taught in Greensboro, VT and then at Edmunds Middle School in Burlington, VT.
Ken then moved to Kittery, Maine where began a long career as a middle school science teacher in the Portsmouth N.H. School System. He retired in 1994.
Ken enjoyed reading, hiking, bicycle touring, skiing at Sunday River in Maine and fishing aboard the Bunny Clark out of Ogunquit. He traveled the world, often in the company of his lifelong friends, Ralph and Kathleen Dodge. He had a special connection with Kenya and returned there many times.
Ken will be remembered by his friends and family as good natured and generous, with a great sense of humor. Ken loved sharing a good story, especially about his experiences and adventures in Island Pond.
Survivors include his dear friends,Ralph and Kathleen Dodge, nieces, Kandy Culver and husband Richard of West Lebanon, N.H. and Beth Karlen and husband Tom of West Lebanon, N.H. Also, grand nieces, Sarah Culver, Emily Bobkowski, Kacy Karlen and grandnephew, Scott Karlen.
Ken was predeceased by his parents and sister, Mavis.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests honoring his memory by thanking a teacher.
