URBANA - Eddie Lee Carter, 92, of Urbana died at 1:35 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Champaign.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Urbana. The Rev. Lundy Savage will officiate. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday at the church. Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Carter was born on Nov. 3, 1917, in Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of Johnie and Sidney Ann Craig McDonald. She married Clarence Carter on April 21, 1935, in Pine Bluff, Ark. He died on Jan. 17, 1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Jo Anne Jackson of Urbana; two daughters-in-law, Essie Carter of Champaign and Bernice Carter of Baton Rouge, La.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, three sisters, one brother, one grandson and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Carter received her elementary and high school education in Pine Bluff, and at the age of 56 she returned to school at Parkland College to earn an associate degree as a teaching assistant.
Mrs. Carter was a 60-year member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Urbana, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, church clerk for 32 years and a member of the Mothers and Deaconess Board. She had a special love for her pastor, L. Savage, and his wife.
She enjoyed visiting the sick, loved fishing, cooking, buying gifts, and enjoyed fellowship with her family.
Mrs. Carter was a member of the Healthcare Consumers Alliance and was honored in 2008 for her work with that organization.
A special thanks to Myrtle Ali for her loyalty and helping in many ways. Also a thank you to David and Carolyn Johnson for holding her in the highest esteem and all the acts of kindness they have done for her.
The family would like to thank the hospice nurses and the Heartland staff for taking good care of mother Carter.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

My prayers go out to the family. I remember with fondness the days when Mrs. Carter was my Sunday School teacher, something I will be forever thankful for, even when she disciplined me and Carmen. God Bless each of you. Embrace the comfort of knowing that she is resting in God's peace.
