BRUNSWICK, Maine – Emily Josephine Mathers Toman, age 91, died July 15, 2008, at Hawthorne House in Freeport, Maine, after a strong and valiant struggle with declining health.
She was born April 26, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of John A. Mathers and Inez Carpenter Mathers. She graduated from South High School, Class of 1935, in Cleveland.
She married Clarence William Toman in Cleveland on July 15, 1939. Mr. Toman died March 16, 2004, in Westwood, Mass., where Emily and Clarence lived at Fox Hill Village for eight years after moving from their home in Dedham, Mass.
They relocated from Cleveland to Dedham in 1968, and were active in Dedham's Allin Congregational Church and the Dedham Community House for over 30 years. Emily was a homemaker and community volunteer, an avid reader and loved music and baseball. She moved to Brunswick in 2004 after the death of her husband.
She is survived by daughter, Pat Schutt, and her husband Dr. Norman Schutt, of Champaign, and daughter, Peggy Siegle of Brunswick, Maine; grandchildren, Wendy and her husband Nishant Upadhyay of Sun Prairie, Wis., David Siegle of Boston, Mass., Heather Ross, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Laura Siegle of Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Preston Ross, Lauren Ross of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Nikhil Upadhyay of Sun Prairie, Wis.
A memorial service will be held at the Allin Congregational Church, Dedham, Mass., Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 2 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High Street, Dedham, Massachusetts 02026, or the Dedham Community Association, Inc., 671 High Street, Dedham Square, Massachusetts 02026.
