Gregory "Greg" Sellers

CHAMPAIGN - Gregory Neal Sellers, 66, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, from complications related to lung cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.

Greg was born on April 11, 1958, in Champaign-Urbana, to Gary and Velma (Johnson) Sellers.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his grandparents, Frederick and Marguerite Sellers and Howard and Madge Johnson, all of Peoria.

Greg grew up on Easy Street in Urbana and graduated from Urbana High School in 1976. He went on to attend Parkland College. During his youth, he was a proud member of DeMolay International, where he earned medals for sharpshooting.

Throughout his career, Greg worked in a variety of roles that showcased his technical skill and creativity. He started at the Tartan Tray in Lincoln Square Mall, operated television cameras at WCIA Channel 3, and worked as a wedding photographer. He later supported software clients while employed at MicroAge. Greg found his long-term professional home at the Champaign Telephone Company (later Consolidated Communications), where he served as a technician for over 27 years. He concluded his working life at Christie Clinic.

Greg was a man of many passions. He cherished the times with his sons out in nature or looking for arrowheads. Music was deeply woven into his life; he played guitar, bass and drums. After high school, he played drums for the Funky Thought band. It was through music that he met his beloved wife, Ellen Holy, while playing in the band PopGun 5. Greg also played on worship teams at Grace Community and Stone Creek churches, where he was affectionately known by younger musicians as "Papa Greg."

An adventurer at heart, Greg loved riding his Harley and flying his ultralight plane, often taking to the skies with his dear friend, Mick Schumacher. One of his final flights was a beautiful journey above the clouds on a sunny day in December - a memory his loved ones will cherish.

Greg is survived by his wife of over 13 years, Ellen; two sons, Graham Sellers (Kelly Meeks) of Rantoul and Tyler Sellers of Flagstaff, Ariz.; his sister, Linn (Merrill) Kaney of Lebanon, Tenn.; granddaughters, Olivia and Morgan Sellers; niece, Aubrey (Christopher) Newman, and nephew, Jason (Sara) Kaney, both of Tennessee; and two great-nephews, Wesley Kaney and Carter Newman. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Coda.

Greg's personality touched everyone who knew him. His friends and family remember him for his love of life and the generosity he showed to those around him.

A celebration of Greg's life and visitation will be held at the café of Stone Creek Church, Urbana, on Saturday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a small memorial celebration to follow.
