Gregory Whitt Obituary

Gregory S. Whitt Urbana - Gregory S. Whitt, 87, passed away peacefully at home early Sunday morning, Nov. 16, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Born on June 13, 1938, in Detroit, he was the son of Sidney and Millicent Whitt. Greg's life was marked by curiosity, scholarship and a deep commitment to understanding the natural world. He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where he studied zoology and genetics, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees with honors in 1962. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in biology (developmental genetics) from Yale University in 1970. His distinguished academic career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign began in 1969 and spanned over four decades. Greg's work in genetics and evolution earned him national recognition, along with numerous honors for both his research and editorial contributions. He was an associate in the University of Illinois Center for Advanced Study and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Upon his retirement in 2010, he was named professor emeritus in animal biology. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Greg lived a life enriched by international travel, friendship and the beauty of nature. At home, his favorite place was Meadowbrook Park, where he enjoyed long walks and delighted in spotting deer among the trees. Time spent with family and close friends was among his greatest joys. Greg is survived by his wife, Virni Pope; brother, Ward (Joanna); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Dixie Whitt. In accordance with Greg's wishes, no formal service will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory may do so through donations to the Urbana Park District or the Champaign County Humane Society.
