CHAMPAIGN - Katrina (Katie) Elizabeth Smith Rhoades, 53, of Champaign died at 9:59 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2025) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Katie was born Feb. 22, 1972, in Champaign, the daughter of Michael and Jean Smith of Champaign.
She married Shane Aaron Rhoades on July 4, 1994, in Champaign.
She is survived by Shane; her son, Michael Aaron Rhoades; father and mother, Michael and Jean Smith; brother, Zachary Smith (Margee); and sons, Charlie, Tom and Jack.
Despite the identification of epilepsy at an early age, Katie lived a full and courageous life. After she and Shane raised Michael, she attended Parkland College and received an associate degree in secretarial science. She accepted an internship at Restoration Urban Ministries followed by employment there as a receptionist at Restoration's food bank, and doing community outreach. Katie was currently studying at the Urbana Theological Seminary, with her intent to serve in a church and the community where she lived. She was greatly loved and will be missed.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. at Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy, with Pastor Ervin Williams of Restoration Urban Ministries officiating. The family requests donations be made in memory of Katrina Rhoades to the Carle Health Center for Philanthropy with notations to be utilized at CU Carle Neuroinstitute.
