Mary Kelley Obituary

Mary Jane Kelley Champaign - Mary Jane (Maybanks) Kelley died Saturday (Dec. 6, 2025). She was born on March 2, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Earl and Agnes (Donahue) Maybanks. She earned an undergraduate degree at Marycrest College, a master's at Creighton University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. She worked in education for her career, first as a high school English teacher in Rockford. After earning her Ph.D., she spent the remainder of her professional days in medical education at the University of Illinois as an educational specialist in the Department of Internal Medicine, East Tennessee State University as an assistant professor, and the University of Virginia Health System as director of curriculum and evaluation in internal medicine. She married Paul Kelley on July 13, 1968. They were blessed with two children, John (Elizabeth) of Champaign and Claire (Jess Lewis) of Richmond, Va. Four grandchildren added great fun to her life, Colin (Carly), Nora Kelley and Brighid and Evelyn Bjorkholm. Most recently, she became great-grandmother to Miles and Jack Kelley. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, George. She is survived by two sisters, Jeannie Cambridge and Sheila (Jerry) Doherty; her sisters-in-law, Sue Maybanks and Margo Tully; brother-in-law, Paul Murphy; and many cherished nieces and nephews. There will be final services at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the ClarkLindsey Lindsey Life Center (Circle of Friends) or the Champaign Public Library.
