MAHOMET - Raymond Phillip Bowers Jr., born on Jan. 2, 1946, in Detroit, passed away Sunday (Oct. 26, 2025) in Urbana. He lived a life marked by dedication and service, leaving a rich legacy intertwined with his deep faith and commitment to his community.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joyce E. (McBride) Bowers; brother, Richard Bowers; sons, Bryon (Lisa) Bowers and Tim (Deb) Bowers; grandchildren, Brittany Bowers, Kaylee Bowers, Seth Bowers and Maisie Bowers; and extended family, Emily Rasmussen and Erin Walsh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Ray Bowers Sr.; and siblings, Ronnie and Barb.
Raymond received his master's degree in divinity and began his career preaching in Austin, Minn. His calling took him across several towns, including Minneapolis, Loves Park, Kankakee, Trenton, Mich., and Milwaukee. Later in life, he worked as an intern at the Lutheran Churches of Mahomet and Clifton.
Beyond his work in ministry, Raymond found joy in various hobbies. He was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking and caring for plants.
Raymond will be remembered not only for his contributions to his faith community but also for the kindness and wisdom he shared with family and friends. His legacy of love and service will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Raymond's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Lutheran Church of Mahomet, 410 Andover Drive. Officiating will be Pastor Ron Poe. Inurnment will follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center's Mahomet Chapel, 1102 Churchill Road, has been entrusted with handling funeral arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made in Raymond's name to The Parkinson's Foundation.
