Reid Acord Obituary
Reid A. Acord
Champaign - Reid Alexander Acord, 47, of Champaign passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025.
Reid was born at Burnham City Hospital, Champaign, to Carol and Steve Acord on Aug. 1, 1978, the second of four boys. As a child, Reid attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School and Jefferson Middle School, where he played the cello in orchestra. He was a 1996 graduate of Champaign Centennial High School, where he played soccer all four years and ran track his senior year. While in high school, Reid served on the Appalachia Service Project through Faith United Methodist Church. After high school, Reid attended the University of Illinois, where he was originally a Forestry major in the College of ACES before graduating in 2001 with a degree in speech communication. While at the UI, Reid was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity just as his father, Steve, and uncle, Sam Gillespie, were.
After graduation, Reid moved to Chicago to take a job with Bank One in the Rogers Park neighborhood. He lived in the Lincoln Park and Lakewood neighborhoods while moving up the banking ladder. Among the other banks Reid worked for were: Northern Trust, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan and BMO Harris Bank. Some of the activities Reid enjoyed while in the city were attending the annual Chicago Air and Water Show, visiting the Shedd Aquarium and Lincoln Park Zoo, many rock concerts, and countless Bears, Cubs, Bulls, Illini and Blackhawks games. Reid's favorite thing to do in the city was fish; he lived a block away from the lakefront and enjoyed many summer and early autumn days fishing in Belmont and Diversey Harbor. He was always excited when his brother John would visit, as they could walk and explore the city, then spend the afternoon collecting crawdads for bait to use in the early evenings.
Reid was a lifelong learner and was always curious about how things work and how they are made. Countless Saturday afternoons were spent with his brothers and father at Memorial Stadium as the Illini played. He caught the fishing bug early, as did all his brothers. Many hours were spent on the Mississippi River with his grandfather, Dr. Carl J. Weissmann, fishing and learning about life. He was proud of his Scottish and Swedish heritage, and spent many hours researching his family's histories in the old country.
Reid is survived by his mother, Carol (David Mauck) Weissmann Mauck of Champaign; and his three loving brothers, Drew (Jodi Fox) Acord of St. Louis, John (Mary-Courteney Green) Acord of Greenville, N.C., and Peter (Kourtney Steinkamp) Acord of Mahomet; stepbrother James Mauck of Champaign; as well as numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as his loving father, Steve, who we know will welcome him to Providence with open arms.
Visitation will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect, Champaign at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, with funeral services immediately following at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith United Methodist Church Appalachian Service Project.
