Robert Monti Obituary

CHAMPAIGN - Robert "Pops" Louis Monti, 79, of White Heath passed away Saturday (June 28, 2025) in Pontiac.

He was born April 26, 1946, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, to Henry and Anne (Bittner) Monti.

He attended Willowbrook High School, where he played football and later graduated from Glenbard East after the family moved. He attended the University of Illinois with interests in forestry, physical education and education.

In his early years, he worked as a caddy at Butterfield Golf Course. In high school, he worked for his parents in the evenings at the family restaurant, and during summer breaks, he also worked at McDonald's Machine Shop during the day, expected to work 16-hour days. He worked for his parents at BiGimini Pizza in Lombard from 1960-1968 and later for the new owners. While attending the UI, he worked the lunch counter at Walgreens in Champaign, where he met his future wife. While home during breaks, he was a butcher at Jewel and a wire tester at Belden Wire Company. While attending the UI, he founded Papa Del's Pizza, established Oct. 24, 1970, which coincided with a UI homecoming football game. Since that day, he worked seven days a week, taking very few days off, even as a multiple cancer survivor, until he was hospitalized.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Monti (2003); mother, Anne Monti (2011); and twin brother, Richard Monti (2017).

He is survived by his siblings Henry (Joan) Monti of Fairfax Station, Va., Michael Monti of Racine, Wis., Michele Lemons of Apopka, Fla., Mark Monti of Apopka and Dean Monti of Racine. He leaves behind his wife, Elizabeth (Bennett) Monti of White Heath; son, Robert Louis Monti Jr. (Elicia Slate-Monti) of Champaign; daughters, Andrea (Troy) Seten of Seymour, Victoria (Cary) Christensen of Surprise, Ariz., and Meredith Monti of Urbana; as well as his grandchildren, Colin, Wyatt and Zachary Monti, Harper and Dempsey Seten, Greyson, Freyja, Maynard Monti-Martin and Lucia Monti.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Black Hills of South Dakota, family summer vacations, keeping a large garden and orchard, and attending Illini football and Illini basketball games. His favorite holiday was the Fourth of July.

He was an Illini season ticket holder for basketball and football for many decades, an avid fan since 1964, a member of the I-Fund Loyalty Circle and member of the Rebounder's Club. He was active in his son, Robert Jr.'s, Boy Scout troop, helping with the Pinewood Derby, the Klondike annual event, canoeing 50 miles on the Spoon River and hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch. He attended many of his children's sporting events and hosted many end-of-the-year banquets for the teams.

Later in life, he enjoyed international travel with his wife and was able to visit his family's hometown in Caprarola, Italy.

His visitation will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign, on Sunday, July 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at the church. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Champaign.

Condolences to the family, and a salute to the best darn pizza for thousands of miles, both the deep dish and the more classic thin tavern style. I understand these recipes were Bob's creation inspired by his family's restaurant experience and is an awesome legacy. I also understand he monitored quality closely, so I hope this will continue out of respect to his culinary genius.

Sending my condolences to friends and family we remember our beloved, "Pops." I'm one of many who worked with Pops over the years. I started at the Wright Street location, when I convinced him that training me to wait tables in advance meant I'd be ready when Green Street opened! He gave me one of those long thoughtful looks and said I was hired. I'm so thankful he did. Sometimes, he was a man of few words, but I certainly learned a lot from his example of hard work, kindness, attention to quality, and love of family-including the Papa Del's family.

I first came to know Bob as the President of the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity at the U of I in 1968. I and my fraternity brothers soon came to know Bob (also known as "Del", "Pops" and "Poppa Del") as a close and trusted friend. In 1970 he opened Papa Del´s Restaurant and Pizzeria in Champaign. Over the next 50 years Papa Del´s became Legendary in Champaign, but at the beginning, Pops made it pretty much of a Phi Sigma operation. We were his pizza makers, waiters and delivery men during those early Papa Del years. He was the same Bob Monti in Poppa Dell´s that he was in our Phi Sig house. He gave each his all and he cared deeply about the people whose lives he touched in each. The passage of time never lessened the strong connection that we had with Bob. Over the decades we continued to make wonderful memories together. We became Uncles to Beth and Bob´s four kids. So many precious moments tethered together by U of I football tailgates and basketball games, and more recently by anniversaries and retirements and, yes, even illnesses.
The one common denominator through it all was Bob. He never lost any of those qualities that made him so special.
Bob Monti was always, simply put, a good man. He walked the walk. What you saw is what you got. There was nothing pretentious about Bob. He trusted people and sometimes got stung, but he never stopped trusting. He forgave easily, and freely gave people second chances and more. He would give you the shirt off of his back and expected little in return.
It has been a privilege for me to have known Bob "Poppa Del" Monti for all these years and to have been able to call him my friend.

Bob was a customer of the bank I worked at in college. He'd often come in with pizza for us behind the teller line. An awesome guy - sending my condolences.

Bob and Beth lived several blocks from us in SE Urbana. Never saw Bob as he was always working! Two of their children were born with in hours of our 2 children and they grew up together at Yankee Ridge school, middle school and high school where we saw Beth often. Remembering you and your family. Sincere condolences from us.
Our condolences to Beth and her Children.
