Shirley Jones Obituary

Shirley M. Jones Rantoul - Shirley Maxine (Ellis) Jones, 91, of Rantoul passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2025. She was born May 4, 1934, in Penfield, the daughter of Harry E. and Florence Irene (Foster) Ellis. She is survived by her husband, Jack Jones; sons, Jeffrey L. (Angela) Jones of Rantoul and Jon E. Jones of Chicago; sister, Norma (John) Emkes; and nephews, Doug Emkes and Kevin Emkes. Shirley grew up in Penfield and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1952. Following high school, she worked at Roger's Chevrolet and later as the bookkeeper for the family-owned Jones Carpentry and Construction in Rantoul. Shirley married John H. "Jack" Jones on March 13, 1960. Their love story was nothing short of extraordinary, celebrated in a unique and memorable way as they rode together on the back of a fire truck. Jack, who served as the Rantoul fire chief, shared many joyful moments with Shirley, who remained his steadfast partner throughout their lives together. Shirley's spirit of service extended far beyond her professional duties. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, where she exemplified leadership and commitment over many years. Throughout her tenure, Shirley held various elected positions, including that of department president in 1990. Her contributions were felt on a national scale, where she served as the National Executive Committee woman and convention chairman in Chicago. Moreover, she was actively involved in Central Division committees focused on Americanism, the Auxiliary Emergency Fund and National Security, while also participating in programs that nurtured education and leadership, including Girls State and Girls Nation. In addition to her involvement with the American Legion Auxiliary, Shirley was a proud member of Piatt County Salon Eight & Forty, further reflecting her dedication to service and community. A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center's Lux Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul, IL 61866. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in Shirley's name to the Prairieland Council Scouts of America Jack Jones Arena Camp Drake or the donor's choice of charity. Please join Shirley's family in sharing memories, photos and videos on her tribute wall at sunsetfuneralhome.com.

We pause with reverence to remember Shirley Jones of Rantoul, Illinois, whose life was a gift to all who knew her. Shirley´s presence was marked by kindness, warmth, and a steadfast love for her family and community. Her passing leaves a tender ache, yet her legacy continues in the lives she touched and the memories she created.

May we hold her family and friends in the Light during this time of grief. May they find comfort in the assurance that love endures beyond death, and that Shirley´s spirit remains with them-in laughter remembered, in stories retold, and in the quiet strength she inspired.
