Lee and Cindy Brewster

January 24, 2015

Ray and Ruth saved Brewster Builders and gave us work that has lasted until this day. Because of their beautiful house, a carpenters dream house, we were able to build a very large addition for a client and are still working for that family today. Ruth, Polly and Mary Smith had us work on their lovely church building for many years. We even did a major remodel to the nurses station at the Christian Science Home in Cleveland Heights.
the late 70's early 80's there was zero construction and I couldn't buy a job. Ray and Ruth gave me their house to build and jumpstarted my whole business carrier.
Ruth was so proud of her grandkids and loved to talk about what they were doing. After leaving Ohio she would send me interesting articles about neat houses being built around the country. She loved Cindy's Christmas Cards with the hand painted dogs, etc.
There are a few people you run into in life that are truly special and Ruth was one of them!

Lee and Cindy Brewster

January 21, 2015

I meant Ray and Ruth through Mary and Polly Smith, great friends of theirs and members of their church, in 1983. Ray and I shook hands on a deal to build their dream house. They had David Howard an architect they meant in Vermont design and erect the timber frame section of the house. Brewster Builders built the garage, apartment above the garage, Nolan Plumbing did the slab hot water heat and plumbing, my brother Skip did a lot of the custom Cypress trim, Dean Becker built the custom kitchen cabs out of a Cypress beer vat. Ray bought a big beer vat that was made of 6" x 17" Cypress timbers. We hauled them around the corner to an old farmer, Arvo Komssi, who ripped then into 1" thick boards. My brother Skip and Dean Becker (shop teacher at Riverside High School) built the kitchen cabs out of those boards. The kitchen was beautiful and the whole house was truly beautiful. When Arvo was cutting the wood there was a strong smell of beer.
When Howard Van Diest started the house foundation Ray had a new John Deere tractor and was having a blast helping get the site ready for the timber frame foundation. We came to work one morning to find he had passed during the night. The timber frame had been ordered, we were working on the garage which was conventional framing. I went to Ruth, she said we are going to build this house, just keep going as you are. We didn't miss a beat and got the foundation ready for the frame.
We were all there the day the red oak timber frame arrived with the three young guys to put it together. They got out of their truck, carried a big cooler into the center of the foundation, got out a bottle of beer each, sat down and made plans to start. They got out their big wooden mallets and chisel's and got started. A lot of the frame had been finished in Vermont but they had to custom fit all the pieces together. It went up fast and was fun to watch them. They stayed at Quail Hollow, loved the pool and hot tub. Became good friends with the young pretty lifeguards. They were a little crazy and would cannon ball into the hot tub. They built the frame and then added a 2x4 and foam prebuilt sections to the outside of the frame. We covered those foam panels with cedar siding later.
We did a lot of work on the old dairy barn in front of the house, before starting the house, to use it for storage, etc. The electrician Russ Chiappone was working in the barn, reached for a black piece of wire and it was a snake. Russ about died from a heart attack and wouldn't go back in the barn to finish his work. The house was quite a challenge for me without Ray to help me. Ray and Ruth had planned this house for years. It is a beautiful house, beautiful location, steep bank behind the house going down to Big Creek. George Milanich built the Count Rumford Fireplace with special permission from the building dept. A Rumfort fireplace gives out better heat but is not the norm. Ruth had her weaving loom up in the loft and her computer. We built large decks behind the house looking out over the ravine.
I would stop from time to time and we would sit on the deck and talk for a while. Ruth loved her dogs and I would bring my dog, border collie Cripes, to play with hers sometimes.
All good things come to an end and Ruth had to leave her perfect house. We were all worried about her living out there alone and she needed to be closer to her family.
I was sad when we helped her pack up and leave that final time.
We kept in touch with emails and Christmas cards over the years.
Ruth was quite a women. I think she went on a rafting trip to Colorado the year we started the house? She loved to travel and had lots of stories to tell. She was so good to the Brewster Family.
We loved her.
Rest in piece old friend.
