Dorothy Winters Obituary

NEW SMYRNA BEACH - Dorothy S. Winters, 86, of Faulkner Street, a teacher of social studies and English and was a guidance counselor in several high schools, died Thursday at Hospice House. Mrs. Winters moved here in 1924 from Norwich, N.Y., her birthplace. She earned her bachelor's of science degree from Stetson University and her master's degree from Teachers College at Columbia University, New York City. She served on the board of directors of Wesley House. She aided in the contribution from Sun Oil Co., the donation of a closed service station on West Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach, to the Southeast Volusia County Visiting Nurse Association. She was awarded the Community Citizen Award, The Grange, New Smyrna Beach, Woman of the Year by Professional Women and The Norman Vincent Peale Certificate of Scholarship. She was a lifetime member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, the Florida Council State Garden Clubs and the National Button Club Society. Survivors include a friend, Dorothy Springer, New Smyrna Beach, who provided for her care. Memorial donations may be made to the Peale Center for Christian Living, Route 22, Pawling, NY 12564; or to Florida Sheriff Youth Ranch, P.O. Box 2000, Boys Ranch, FL 32064; or to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129. Settle-Wilder, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.
