Iris Andrews Obituary

Funeral service for Iris Ross Andrews, 92, Wilmington, N.C., formerly of Tangerine Avenue, DeLand, who died April 3, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Wilmington, N.C., will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel, DeLand. Burial will be at DeLand Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Andrews was born in Henry, Va., on May 17, 1914, and moved from there to DeLand in 1925. She graduated DeLand High School in 1933. Her father, watchmaker C.G. Ross, installed the clocks in the old DeLand Courthouse Dome. During World War II, her skills as a stenographic reporter landed her a job in the ulta-secret National War College in Washington D.C., where she retired in 1962. She moved back to DeLand in 1965 and went to work for then Apgar and Aberts Law firm. She was an avid Bible reader and woman of great faith with a passion for selflessly helping the needy. One of her favorite sayings was "When you give to the poor you are lending to God." Iris was the last of six brothers and sisters and was preceded in death by her husand, Melvin K. Andrews. Iris is survived by two sons, Wayne K. Andrews, DeLand, and George W. Andrews and wife, Carolyn H. Andrews, Wilmington, N.C.; three grandsons, David, Christopher and Steven; and many nieces and nephews.
