John Stanton Obituary

Dr. John C. "Jack" Stanton, age 93, of New Smyrna Beach, strong, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, died Sunday, February 1, 2015. Born in St. Louis, MO, son of Robert F. and Ann M. Stanton, he was a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Dentistry, and served in the U.S. Navy, WWII on the U.S.S. Randall in the Pacific Theatre and in the Korean War. In 1944 he married his beloved wife, Mary Carolyn Cavanaugh. He practiced dentistry in Daytona Beach and until his retirement was an orthodontist in Lakeland, FL. Jack is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and thirteen of his fourteen children: Carol Stanton (John Parrell), Orlando, FL; Kathleen Kissel (Harve), New Smyrna Beach, FL; Dr. John Stanton (Carol), Titusville, FL; Mark Stanton (Melissa), McDonough, GA; Patrick Stanton (Ellen), Chagrin Falls, OH; Michael Stanton (Diane), Seattle, WA; Anne Smith (Jay), Orlando, FL; Martha Bellamy (Dennis), Toccoa, GA; Thomas Stanton, Richmond, VA; James Stanton (Kelly), Charleston, SC; Mary Baryenbruch (Dan), Oregon, WI; Dr. William Stanton (Laura), Ft. Pierce, FL; Joseph Stanton (Lisa), Orlando, FL, 39 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 11 nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Stanton (Dorothea), St. Louis, MO, sisters-in-law Catherine Zahner, Kansas City, MO, Jane Stanton, Mendocino, CA. Pre-deceased by his brother, Robert Stanton, Jacksonville, FL, and son, Robert Stanton, Sarasota, FL. A life-long, faithful Catholic, Jack was a lector at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, member of the Human Services Ministry and the Bishop's Appeal Committee. He helped establish Santa Fe Catholic High School, Lakeland, FL as well as new parishes in Daytona Beach and Lakeland. He served on the Diocesan Board of Education and was a frequent lector for the Diocese of Orlando TV Mass. In his retirement he became a potter and generously volunteered in the ceramics department of W.O.R.C. in Daytona Beach and Ocean View Nursing Home, New Smyrna Beach. He was a member of the Seniors Golf Association, New Smyrna Beach Golf Course. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2015 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, preceded by viewing at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater, in the Veterans Field of Honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Human Services Ministry, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 4000 S. Atlantic Avenue, New Smyrna Beach, Florida 32169.
