Martha Maryes

Martha Carlisle Maryes, 84, of Pierson, FL lost her battle with cancer on May 2nd, 2014. She was born March 25, 1930 in Pierson, FL to the late Robert L. Carlisle Sr. and Ulrica Black Carlisle. Martha was a graduate of Pierson High School and Stetson University in DeLand, FL, earning a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. Martha was an elementary school teacher in Volusia County, FL for 35 years. She taught at Seville Elementary, Pierson Elementary, and McGinnis Elementary School, also serving as a principal and earning Teacher of the Year. After retiring, her passion for teaching was so strong that she substituted and volunteered within the school system for another 10 years. Martha was an active member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Pierson, FL and also an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, an Honorary Organization for Women Educators. Martha loved to travel and was known and sought after for her cooking and baking. She was very artistic and could sew and craft anything. Martha never sat still; there was always a garden to tend, bird feeders to fill, and pets to care for. She adored all her grandchildren and bragged on them whenever she could. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents was her brother Robert (Bobby) Carlisle Jr. She is survived by her three sons, David Maryes, Pierson, FL; Otis (Bay) Maryes, Bunnell, FL; and John Maryes and his partner Babs Cawood, Ormond Beach, FL; six grand-daughters, ten great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and her brother Claude Francis "Baby" Carlisle and his wife Loette of Pierson, FL. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12th at 11:00am at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Pierson; interment will follow at the Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery. Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand will be handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Florida Hospital Hospice Care.
