Monsignor Valentine Sheedy
01/23/1927 - 07/14/2018
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Monsignor Valentine Sheedy. He was born on January 23, 1927 in Feakle, County Clare, Ireland to Jeremiah and Lillian (McGrath) Sheedy. He was the third child, second son, in a family that eventually had six sons and three daughters. As a young man, he was known for his love of sports. He was a star athlete in sprinting, hurling and rugby, but always felt a calling for something more in his life. Near the end of his boarding school years, one of his teachers, a priest from the Congregation of the Holy Ghost Fathers, encouraged him to consider the priesthood. He studied at University College in Dublin and received his bachelor degrees in English and Philosophy from the Holy Ghost Seminary in Kimmage Manor, Dublin. Monsignor Sheedy was ordained on July 3, 1955. Shortly after, he was sent to the Owerri Diocese in Eastern Nigeria (at that time called Biafra) to teach. He remained in the country for 12 years until civil war forced him and other missionaries to leave. Monsignor Sheedy arrived in the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1967 and was incardinated into the Diocese of Orlando on February 16, 1973. He remembered those times fondly saying in a recent interview, "There were so many hard-working priests. The priests in Orlando are second to none in their industry. Their commitment and their witness was great." Monsignor Sheedy served at four parishes – as assistant pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Palm Bay and Blessed Trinity Parish in Orlando, and as pastor at Ascension Parish in Melbourne, and Resurrection Parish in Lakeland. He was responsible for building and expanding schools and parishes at both Ascension and Resurrection. Monsignor Sheedy also served as Vicar Forane of the Southern Deanery of the Diocese of Orlando; as a member of the College of Consultors; a board member of Melbourne Central Catholic High School; and oversaw the establishment of the RENEW program in the Diocese of Orlando. After retirement in 1998, he assisted at St. Brendan Parish, Ormond Beach and Church of the Epiphany in Port Orange. "God has blessed the Diocese of Orlando," shared Sheedy in 2017. "I thank God for my vocation. The cross is a part of life for everybody. I can assure it's also part of the priestly life, but the rewards are infinite." Monsignor Sheedy died in Chicago on Saturday, July 14. He is survived by his brothers, Declan M. Sheedy, and sister-in-law, Susan Sheedy, Kieran Sheedy, sister-in-law, Terry, Dermot Sheedy, sister-in-law, Marie; nephew, Dermot, and his wife, Cathy, and their children. Organized a 17 Mile Hunger Walk to help the people of Biafra. Father Sheedy walked all 17 miles around Melbourne Causeways and the Indian River. People we sponsored by the mile and the walk was a massive success. Few know that the Gentle priest had caught malaria while serving in Africa.
God Bless You Father Sheedy.

Father,
I came to you on bended knee. I prayed for justice, and you gave me harmony. I prayed for quiet and you gave me rest. I prayed for happiness and you gave me faith. When I again prayed for health you gave me acceptance. But when I prayed for Love, you were silent.

I asked you repeatedly for Love and you stayed silent. After much prayer and bargining, I prayed a last time for Love, and then I realized my answer was,
TO LOVE ! Then you sighed and simply said YES!

I love you God and all that I am, ever was and ever will be is because of You.

Amen
Thank you Father Sheedy.

I have been fortunate to grow up and participate in many parishes in our dioceses since 1966. I was lucky enough to hear Fr Sheedy's homilies on occasion and recently more frequently at Epiphany. When seeing him again at Epiphany I was reminded of what was so memorable. He seemed to always include each of the bible readings and gospel into his homily and even "test" us with questions about the connections between them. He made them alive and beyond words. His Theology and faith were profound but communicated so clearly. And so we were more alive beyond words as I think he will always be. Our Church is rich and generous to give us priests that do this so clearly and with humility. Thank you

This is a song that I wrote ,with mike whinnery ,in fr Val Sheedy' s bible study class, when he was teaching the psalms,( song finalized Vigil of Ascension Day2013) entitled...
"Be Not Afraid!"
( sung)
1)Lord, You know my heart
Lord, You know my soul
Lord, You know my mind
Here I am...here I am....take me
2)Be not Afraid... Be not Afraid...Be not afraid
Open the doors wide....to Christ
Holy Spirit
3)What a sinner am I
This I can not deny
Humble me...with true humility
I' m on down on bended knee...heal me!
( spoken)
don't damn the darkness,
let me light a candle instead
Heavens Angels on my pillow,
Heavens Angels on my pillow,
Lord on high, I praise u for saving us all;
all a place....
Eternally with you
( sung)
Mercy and Grace
Mercy and Grace
(Repeat song)
I love u dearest fr Val.I am eternally grateful to u for many many many things.I only wish I had stayed in your bible study class.I couldn't have learned, been enlightened and bathed in the Holy Spirit more...if it was Our dear Lord himself teaching.....for truly u were His arms, His feet, His mouth, His Sacred heart...a most beautiful Alter Christus. And now u r with Cyril.I know that makes u very happy.Plz continue praying for me...I will continue praying for u.For the summertime is coming....and the trees are sweetly blooming...and the wild mountain thyme....grows around the blooming heather....will u go...oh Laddie....go.....yes...to the Lord we go...step we gaily...on we go...heel for heel and toe for toe....all for the Bridegroom' s heavenly wedding!! st Patrick...pray for us..place your shield to the left and to the right , in front of us and behind us.amen and amen

Monsignor Sheedy has been one of the, if not THE, most influential people in my life. When he taught the Bible, you had the feeling you were there, watching, hearing, feeling the presence of our Lord. Love always came so easily for him. He truly lived a life of Love, Devotion and Giving. Never has there been a more loving, example of God's word, than Monsignor Val Sheedy. There aren't enough words to describe the impact Father Sheedy had on each soul he met, but all the words would be positive, uplifting and completely spiritual. He will be missed so very much and will forever be in my heart. Thank you Father Sheedy and I'll be feeling your watchful eye all the remainder of my days.
