William White

Bill White, 90, of Edgewater FL, passed away on July 20, 2017. Bill was born in Nashville TN. He is survived by his wife, Pam White; his sister, Jody Edwards, and her husband, Clint Edwards; his son, William Monroe White, III, and his wife, Joan White; his daughter, Gail Scott White, and her husband, Kirby Malone; his daughter, Carol Ann White; and his granddaughter, Lauren Scott White. During World War II, Bill was a U.S. Army combat medic in Leyte and Cebu in the Philippines. After the war ended, he served for a year in the Army of Occupation in Tokyo. In 1946, Bill entered Vanderbilt University in his hometown on the GI Bill, and earned both his BA and MA in English with honors in 1951. In 1953, he earned his PhD in American Literature from the University of Florida. Bill and his first wife, Ann, moved to Blacksburg VA, where they both taught at Virginia Tech. They had three children who followed Bill with careers in the arts. Billy, Gail and Carol have enjoyed a lifetime of teaching and performing in music, visual art and writing, respectively. His grandchild, Lauren Scott White, is a pure joy and currently is working on her Masters degree in Philadelphia. From 1953 to 1990, Bill was an English Professor at Virginia Tech, where he directed many Master's theses in American Literature and Creative Writing. He is the author of four books (one Book-of-the-Month Club selection) and more than a hundred short stories, articles and poems. Bill and Ann divorced in the late 1970s. Several years later, Bill and Pam met and married in Virginia, and later they moved to their new home in Edgewater FL on the Intracoastal Waterway, where they pursued their love of nature. The greatest joy in Bill's life was his coming together with his soulmate, Pam. His three kids and granddaughter continued to make him proud of them. Love without bounds. Bill gave many poetry readings since his retirement in June 1990. He started a local Duplicate Bridge Club, and he and Pam ran it for more than twenty-five years. They played bridge and square-danced all over the world, from Florida to Australia. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date.
