In 1995-1997, we (Bible Study teachers and students) met Dr. Barclay M. Newman as the CEV was being introduced in New England USA. He presented American Bible Society seminars in both the Boston, MA area and in Bridgeport, CT. What a tremendous learning experience both sessions were. May his inspiring work and memory continue tro be a blessing around the world. We are thankful for his faithful sharing of his gift of Bible translation with so many others to the glory of God!

While the news of Barclay’s passing saddens me—as I’m sure it does his family, many friends, and former co-workers—I am heartened when I think of the many people around the globe who have benefited from his labors in the Bible cause. Not just the people who faithfully read, listen to, and enjoy one of the several Bible translations he spearheaded or worked on, but also the many people he mentored and encouraged as they did their own bit to faithfully bring God’s Word to diverse populations. I count myself a member of both groups. As a junior coworker of Barclay’s, I appreciated Barclay’s patient explanations of theological and technical matters and his generosity in sharing authorial or editorial credit. As a person of faith (and occasional Sunday lector at my church), I continue to rely on the Contemporary English Version when seeking a text “that can be read without stumbling and heard without misunderstanding “ (as Barclay often said of the CEV).
“Sensible instruction
is a life-giving fountain
that helps you escape
all deadly traps.”
(Prov.13:14, CEV).
Rest in peace, good friend.
