Jean Parnell Obituary

Jean Parnell completed her earthly journey Tuesday, June 27, 2006, mid-way through her 87th year after a brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She lived a full and giving life, knew no strangers, and treated all with equal affection and respect. Born December 30, 1919, Jean was raised with sister Mary by her parents J. Wyman and Jessie Hogg in Springfield. After first husband John Rayl was killed in action in World War II, Jean joined the American Red Cross where she served soldiers on the front lines as they advanced to victory. She returned to marry Ben and live with him in Branson for 40 years, before finishing their years together in Springfield. She was a lifelong member and supporter of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, and carried a strong faith in God with her throughout her days. She was active with PEO, the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, St. John's Women's Auxiliary, and Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Drury University, where she received an honorary degree in 1999. Jean loved to sing, fish, play golf and tennis, walk and laugh, and shared friendship with most who knew her. She made the world a brighter place with her love and spirit. A memorial service to celebrate Jean's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in First and Calvary Church in Springfield, with an informal reception to follow in the church atrium. In lieu of flowers, donations to First and Calvary Church, the American Red Cross and the Alzheimer's Association are welcomed. Special thanks are due to the many kind people at the Manor at Elfindale who cared for Jean these past few years. Arrangements are under the care of GormanScharpf Brentwood Chapel.
