John Hancock Obituary

John David Hancock

John David Hancock, was born February 9, 1963, in Rolla, Missouri to Carl and Iva Lee (Bond)Hancock. John spent his early and adolescent years in and around the Texas County area, graduating from Plato High School in 1981.

After high school John enrolled in Evangel University transitioning to the Springfield area where he resided for the rest of his life. John was very proud of Springfield, its industries and opportunities. He carried an enthusiasm for what this region and Missouri had to offer in everything he did. This was exemplified by his many roles at Prime, Inc., where he worked from 1986 up until the present. He began working nights in the Operations Department and over the course of his employment John held various positions, ultimately advancing to the position of Director of Recruiting and Training. John loved the trucking industry. He loved truckers. He relished the role of leading men and women to become entrepreneurs. Many have benefitted, and many will miss him.

In addition to his professional endeavors, John devoted his time, energy, enthusiasm, and expertise to the following civic and professional associations: Chairman of the Missouri Motor Carriers Association (2008-2009), Chairman of the Independent Contractor Task Force, and Chairman of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (2011-2013).

He served on the Research Advisory Committee of the American Trucking Association. John was a frequent guest speaker on the Dave Nemo Show, and spoke to various transportation boards. For his contributions to the trucking industry, in 2010, John was awarded the Frank G. Campbell Outstanding Service Award. John could also be found in the halls at the Missouri State Capitol Building, in Jefferson City, lobbying for various economic improvements for the residents of Missouri. John was also very involved in Wreaths Across America, an organization that honors veterans by placing wreaths on these heroes' graves during the Christmas season.

Although John was passionate about his career, the real love of his life was his wife of twenty years, Christie Mann Hancock, and their children; daughters Rachel (19), Rebecca (13), and his son Sam (10). In spite of his busy professional life, John devoted unlimited energy and hours to enjoying his family and friends. Every day was a new opportunity for a "party at our house."

John devoted creative energy for the good and pleasure of everyone he was with, at all times, in every way and was always good for trying something new. No fear.

John was preceded in death by his father Carl. He is survived by his mother, Iva Lee Hancock Shelton and husband Paul, brothers Reginald Hancock and wife Martha, Don Hancock and wife Denise, of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Mark, Jeremy and Amy, David and Sharolyn.

There are many friends who met John through their church. John was always ready and willing to volunteer for whatever task needed to be done. He led his family in committing time and energy to worshiping God and serving others. His enthusiasm and willingness to be a leader will be missed by his church family and all who knew him.

Services for John will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Greenlawn Funeral Home East with visitation from 11:00 to 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. Interment will be in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the John D Hancock Memorial Fund established at Empire Bank.
