Obituary
Dorothy Fitting LeBaron Walters, 82, died peacefully at her home in Fort Myers on December 5, 2000. She was the wife of Dr. William Walters.
Mrs. Walters was born on March 15, 1918 to John and Lucy (Grambart) Westhead. Mrs. Walters was active her entire life fighting for social justice. She was president of the League of Women Voters in Plainfield, NJ for many years, as well as being a leader in efforts there to combat racial segregation and red-lining.
During World War II she worked for Vice Admiral Donald Gibson of the British Royal Navy in Jacksonville, FL. After the war Mrs. Walters held a number of positions as a fund raiser, among them with the Boy Scouts of America, the Somerset County, NJ Community Chest. She also worked for Project Stride in New York City, a federally funded program designed to train and place people in living wage jobs.
Mrs. Walters was an art enthusiast all her life and with her friends, artists Suzanne Shefield and Riva Helfond, founded a number of art associations in New Jersey.
During the last years of her life she had the opportunity to visit her friend, Sir Donald Gibson in England; to cruise the Caribbean with her husband, Dr. Walters; attend her granddaughter Lauren Fitting's high school graduation in Basking Ridge, NJ; and visit her sister Marion Sherry in Norman, OK.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Walters is survived by a sister, Marion Sherry; a brother-in-law, Irwin Curlis of Cooperstown, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Patricia Fitting of Basking Ridge, NJ; a daughter, The Rev. Wendy Fitting of Gloucester, MA; granddaughters, Lauren Fitting of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Melinda Fitting of Neshanic, NJ, and a great-granddaughter, Briana, also of Neshanic.
She is also survived by Dr. Walter's children, Kathy Marry of Michigan and William Walters, Jr. of Indiana, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Walters was predeceased by her husband Milton LeBaron, by her sister, Virginia Curlis of Cooperstown, NY, and by her brother-in-law, Colonel Roy Sherry of Norman, OK.
There will be a memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers on Friday, Feb. 2, at 3:30 p.m. In the spring there will be a graveside service at the Seaside Cemetery in Gloucester, MA.
