Obituary
Marcelle K. Foote of Fort Myers died Wednesday, March 15, 2000. She was born November 12, 1910 in Albion, Indiana to the late George Loomis and Lelia Kitt Foote.
She was an Indiana University Graduate and also received a Case Western Reserve's Library Science degree.
She was librarian in Albion, IN and in Connersville, IN before going to the Indiana State Library as consultant in the Extension Division and became Head of that Division.
She was appointed State Librarian in 1967.
Miss Foote was president of the Indiana Library Association in 1951-1952; was named Indiana Librarian of the year by the Indiana Library Trustee Association in 1966 and in 1975 an honorary Doctor of Letters degree was conferred upon her by Indiana State University for her work with all types of libraries in Indiana.
The Auditorium of the Indiana State Library was dedicated to her in 1977 in recognition of her administrative services. On her last day as State Librarian, retiring in 1977, Governor Otis R. Bowen proclaimed her a Sagamore of the Wabash.
In addition to the many library associations to which she belonged and held offices she was a member of Altrusa International, Delta Zeta Sorority, Alumnae Panhellenic of Lee County, Indiana Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, American Association of University Women and Order of Eastern Star. She was an ordained deacon of the First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis and a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers.
Miss Foote is survived by her nieces and their husbands, Martha Jane Girard and James Girard of Warsaw, IN, and Nancy Ann Cole and Phillip Cole of Fort Wayne, IN.
Also, Grand Nephews Richard and Robert Girard, Rodney and Randy Cole and great grand nieces and nephew, and one great, great grand nephew.
Funeral services are under the direction of the Brazzell Funeral Home in Albion, IN.
