REV. FR. PAPPAS Obituary

Born in Detroit, Michigan on 15 April 1931 to Thomas and Marina Pappas. Attended public schools in Detroit graduating from Southeastern High School in 1948. Attended Assumption Greek Orthodox Church with his family and was baptized there on 6 December 1931 and given the name George Thomas. He served as an Acolyte (Altar Boy/Server) from 4 years old until graduating from high school. He was tonsured a reader by the then Archbishop Athenagoras.

Upon graduating from high school, he entered Holy Cross Theological Seminary in Brookline, MA graduating in May 1953 with a Master's of Divinity.

Evangeline Stergiotis of Detroit and he were married on 14 May 1953 at the Holy Cross Theological Seminary Chapel with Bishop Ezekiel officiating and Fr. Kokkinakis (who later was ordained Bishop) assisting.

He was ordained Deacon on 30 August 1953 by Bishop Ezekiel at his home parish of the Assumption in Detroit. His first assignment was St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Astoria, Long Island, New York where he served as second priest under Fr. Demetrios Frangos until November 1955 when he was assigned to the newly founded Archangel Michael Church in Campbell, Ohio where he served 42 consecutive years until retiring. The late Archbishop Michael ordained him a priest on 6 December (the date of his Baptism) 1953 at the St. Demetrios Church.

While living in Astoria, his first son, Thomas George, was born. Upon moving to Campbell, his children Maria, Father Paul (Apostolos) and Katharine were born. He now also has 7 grandchildren: Peter, George, Stellanie, Leah, James, Nicholas and Felipe.

During his pastorship at Archangel Michael, he received the offikia (Ecclesiastical Titles) of Ieromnymon, Confessor, Sakellarios, Economos, Protopresbyter of the 6th Diocese, Protopresbyter of the Metropolis of Pittsburgh, Protopresbyter of the Archdiocese of North and South America, Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Megas (Great) Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and receiving the Cross of the Patriarchate from Patriarch Bartholomew.

During his 42 years at Archangel Michael, the parish grew from 135 families to over 600 with over 1,500 stewards contributing to the church. He baptized over 1,200 infants; confirmed 50; married over 800 couples. His tenure at Archangel Michael was the most gratifying and spiritually fulfilling. His Archangel Michael Church will always be in his heart.

Upon retiring, Presbytera Evangeline (Angie) and he lived in Fort Myers, Florida 13 years now where they have become part of the Annunciation parish which they love very dearly having met so many wonderful people that have befriended them and they have also come to love dearly.

When not attending and serving at the Annunciation Church, he served as substitute and temporary priest at various churches in the Atlanta Metropolis having served at 17 churches thus far in his retirement.

A memorial service will be chanted at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Friends will be received from 2:00 PM until the time of the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907, 239-936-0555.

My Dearest Father George,
Words can not express the deep pain in my heart since I heard of your passing. You were not only my priest but a close family friend who touched my heart immensly. I will never forget your arrival with your young Presbytera to our new Archangel Michael that we worked so hard to bring to life. God brought you to us to fullfill our dream and that was indeed what you did. Now it is time for you to rest and watch from above your great accomplishments.
Themelis (Tommy) is ready to receive you with open arms, after all, he was your right hand man for many years. There was a special place in his heart for you, as in mine. You will never ever be forgotten. Until we meet again!

Dear Presbytera, Tom, Fr. Paul, Maria, and Katherine,

You have my deepest, heartfelt sympathy. Fr. George was one of my favorite priests. May God grant you peace and comfort at this time and help you all through this.

Fr. George, along with everyone else who grew up in Archangel Michael, it wasn't our church..it was our HOME! I cannot tell you of the comfort I felt there every Sunday. Even though I left Campbell a long time ago, I always think back on my days there. Going to Greek School, being in Jr. Choir, Choir, GOYA, the picnics, and all the other activities we had, you made fun.
Of course there was always the "LOOK" when someone misbehaved in church....and we all knew we'd be in trouble if we didn't straighten out! I LOVED listening to you give the sermon. I LOVED listening to you chant the liturgy. YOU made me LOVE church. All the values you instilled in us as kids, we instilled in our children. What a great thing you have passed on to us!
You will be sadly missed, and always fondly thought of. RIP..May your Memory be Eternal.

So very deeply saddened by the loss of Father Pappas. He was such a dynamic and motivating presence in the lives of so many of us. He married my parents, Donald and Mary, 50 years ago in Archangel Michael and baptized all of their children. We all grew up under the protection of his sturdy wings. I was blessed to know him and respect him as as I grew older count him amongst my friends. May your memory be eternal.

Dear Presvytera and Family,
Words can't express the sorrow that the entire Archangel Michael Community is feeling at this time. Your beloved husband and father, was a very special man to all of us. I will never forget everything that he taught me as a child growing up at Archangel Michael. He instilled faith, tradition and love for our church with a passion like no other. To this day because of him, we have passed these values down to our children.
He was my strength, when I needed him the most. He was truly a "Father" to all of his children at Archangel Michael and his memory will be with us forever. With love.

January 4, 2011

Father Pappas- I thank you for all you have taught me and my family about being a Greek Orthodox Christian. We will always remember you and no matter what church I attend, I always reflect back to what I was taught at Archangel Michael by you, a truly blessed priest. May your memory be eternal -EMC

Fr. Pappas was not only a Great Priest and Friend to many, he was the Backbone of the Greek community in Campbell. He taught all of us many lessons in life that we will never forget. Everyone has their own special time or moment that they remember about Fr. Pappas, and I am certain that they will remember it and him forever. RIP Fr. Pappas.

My heart is broken. I never thought this day would come. Fr. George is Archangel Michael Church and so much more. He is the reason every Greek child raised in Campbell loves our beautiful faith. He is the reason all of us grew up strong and loved. He didn't mess around he told us all exactly what he thought and if we were right or wrong. He didn't play favorites we were all his kids. He was proud of us, he believed in us, he loved us. We were all baptized by him and some of us were lucky enough to be married by him. He prayed for us and wished nothing but wonderful things for all of us. He guided us and listened to us. When we were young he was our priest but as we got older he became our friend our mentor. A person who truly changed our lives. I loved him as if he was my family, I will always love him and always be proud that he was my friend.
May his memory be eternal.
I will miss you dear friend.

Dear Presvytera, Maria, Thoma, Fr. Paul, and Katina,

Our deepest sympathies on the death of your beloved husband and father, and to me, Fr. Pappas. He and my Dad were good friends and brother clergy. I remember your family dinners in which we were included so many times and the jokes they would share - one after another - and twinkles in their eyes, laughing! Our families' friendship goes back as long as I can remember.

He was a special person and loved by so many. We pray that God give rest to his soul and comfort to all of you! May his memory be eternal!

With much love,

‘Say not in grief ‘he is no more ‘but live in thankfulness that he was’.
-Hebrew proverb

Friends are like angels set upon this earth to guide us through thick and thin. Father George was one of these angels who stood beside us throughout the years never asking for anything in return. He will be sadly missed, but his gestures of caring, goodwill, and kindness will be part of our spirit now as we go forward in our lives. He has instilled in us the values of religion and family. He, along with our parents have molded us into the people that we are today. He scolded us, he teased us, and he loved us, like any true friend. There will always be a special place in our hearts for Father Pappas. May his memory be eternal.

Dear Presbytra Angie and Family,

All of us here are saddened by your loss.
Fr. George wasn't just a "good priest" he was a true community leader and served as an example to all of us.

It's difficult to tell you how deeply I feel about Father George's untimely death.
What started when I was a little girl ie;the first Junior Choir, Greek school,a boyfriend or two, a ton of counseling to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up quickly became a warm friendship that took me into adulthood. It was a privilege to have known Fr. George so well, and I will never forget his thoughtfulness, kindness and the pride in his eyes when I served on the National Philoptochos Board under our beloved Archbishop Spyridon. My life is richer for his having lived.

The cosolation for me is that he will be seeing my beloved mother and sharing a chuckle or two with Fr. Art ... I know too, that "Panormiti" in all his splendor will receive him with "Job well done, Good and Faithful Servant" ... How glorious is that?

With great personal sorrow, I ask to share your loss and to extend my heartfelt sympathy.

May Fr. George's soul rest in peace and his memory be eternal.
With all my love.
