James Kilmartin Obituary

Captain James Hardy Kilmartin "Jim" passed away on September 21, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville, Va. Jim was born in Farmville, Va., on January 26, 1949, to his late parents Joseph Hardy Kilmartin and Edith Juanita Foster. After graduating from Nelson County High School in Lovingston, Va., Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he earned a bachelor's degree and attended Officer Candidate School. He served his country with honor and distinction for a successful career spanning approximately 23 years, serving tours in Taiwan, Germany and South Korea, among others. Jim was multi-lingual, speaking the language of each of these foreign locales in which he served his country. Jim embodied the values of duty, honor and loyalty throughout his career and his life, and will always be remembered by his friends and family for his quick wit, generous spirit and unwavering integrity.

Jim is survived by a daughter, Michelle Lewis and husband, Michael of Columbia, Md.; sister, Tanith Knight and husband, George of Faber, Va.; brother, Thomas J. Kilmartin and wife, Kathleen of Milwaukee, Wisc.; and sister, Tesi K. Lamb of Staunton, Va.

A funeral service with full military honors will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, on a date not yet determined.
