Shirley Marie Coleman
November 24, 1944 - January 16, 2022
Shirley Marie Coleman, 77, of Rose Mill Road, Arrington, Va., passed peacefully from our earthly world and into eternity with her Heavenly Father in the evening hours of Sunday, January 16, 2022. Shirley was born on November 24, 1944, in Piney River to the late Charlie Howard and Mary Louise White Martin. She was predeceased by her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 58 years, Samuel "Sammy" Wade Coleman.
Shirley was a hard worker and lived a simple life. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed sitting on the front porch admiring the beauty of her flowers and garden. Not only did she enjoy canning and the bountiful vegetable gardens she and Sammy produced, she also was the best cook! She loved camping trips with family and friends and also vacation time at Myrtle Beach. More importantly, Shirley was extremely devoted to her family, and was a constant source of love, encouragement and support to each. A quiet and sweet soul, she was quick with a kind word or a smile that seemed to make everything just right.
Growing up she attended Rose Union Baptist and was baptized in the Tye River on Saunders bottom. Once married, she became a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She had also been a member of the Piney River Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Shirley had worked at Hilbish's store in Piney River, the Lovingston and Amherst Garment Factory and Hermle Black Forest Clock, and later in her most important and cherished role as homemaker.
She is survived by her children, Billy Wade Coleman (Joyce), Larry Wayne Coleman, and Ginger Marie Hill (Johnny); her grandchildren, Hampton and Sammy Coleman, Timothy McFadden, Morgan, Johanna and Jacob Hill; her brother, Charlie Earl Martin; and her sisters, Josephine Johnson (Jesse) and Ruth Ann Ponton. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was predeceased by sister, Mary Frances White, and brothers-in-law, Donald Ponton and Warren White.
A celebration of Shirley's life was held at graveside 2 p.m. Sunday January 23, 2022, at Jonesboro Cemetery in Roseland by the Rev. John P. Campbell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, Piney River, VA 22964.
