'Jack' Wood

Aubrey Willard "Jack" Wood, 86, of Huddleston, has gone home to be with his Lord on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008.

Surviving is his wife, the "love of his life" of 64 years, Hazel Owens Wood. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Garland M. and Irene Bradley Wood; three brothers, Clayden, Wilburn and Garland "Butch" Wood; and two sisters, Mayonna Fink and Stella Davis.

During World War II, he fought and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge for wounds received in battle, he returned home to Roanoke, where he worked at a variety of jobs, most notably with Burns Detective Agency at General Electric of Lynchburg, while maintaining a farm and finally retiring from Pepsi Cola of Hollins. After retirement, he worked as a security guard at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg.

He was an accomplished musician, sharing his love of music with many, playing various radio shows and occasionally touring locally, often performing for various charities and community events. He was a member of the Huddleston Church of God of Prophecy.

He is also survived by three sons, Aubrey Richard Wood and his fianc?e, Barbara, of Huddleston, Ronald Allen Wood and wife, Darlene, of Roanoke, and Garland Mortermer "Mort" Wood and wife, Greta, of Bedford; two daughters, Betty Wood Overstreet and husband, Gary, and Josie Wood Arney and husband, Earl, of Goode; 11 grandchildren, Cindy Wood, Wendy Wood of Tennessee, Cristy Wood, Jason Wood and wife, Patty, Wayne Overstreet and wife, Suzi, Jaclyn Karnes and husband, Brandon, of Bedford, Daniel Overstreet and wife, Lisa Marie, of Vinton, Holly M. Arney of Roanoke, Dee Wayne Wood, Zack Wood of Bedford, and Chrystal Bradley of Roanoke; 13 great-grandchildren, Dusty Wood, Isiah Wood, Gracie Wood of Tennessee, Justin Wood, Justina Wood, Jace Wood, Sean Karnes, Elizabeth Karnes of Bedford, Aidan Arney, Joby Arney, Jack Arney, Alexis Williams and Dakota Wright of Roanoke; a special nephew/son, Tommy Fink and his children, Billy, Troy, Greg and Jodi; and many fond nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Huddleston Rescue Squad.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. Roger Graves Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 5, 2008, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, Roanoke, (540) 982-2221.

I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE LITTLE SPECIAL TALK THAT UNCLE JACK AND I HAD BEFORE MY FATHER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL IN 1999.
