Cordelia A. Hancock Heretick

Nov 21, 1955 - Jun 6, 2024

Cordelia (Dell) A Hancock Heretick of Lynchburg, passed away June 6, 2024 after a lengthy illness. Her husband, Dave held her hand as she entered into a peaceful and non-suffering realm. Dell grew up in Lynchburg attending Seven Hills School and graduated college receiving a BA from Emory and Henry. Later, she attended Lynchburg University and obtained a master's in education.

During her career, education and service to those in need were primary in her actions whether early on ensuring educational opportunities were available to all youth or in later years becoming a resource and advocate through her work at McGurk House and other agencies providing services to the elderly and intellectually challenged.

She was predeceased by her parents Dr. Edward H Hancock Jr. and Marion E Hancock as well as infant brother, James Charles and more recently her brother, William B Hancock.

She is survived by her loving husband, Dave Heretick of Lynchburg and son, Harrison S Hancock-the joy of the life.

Also surviving are siblings: John (Jack) Hancock of Bedford, Annie Hancock of Ohio, Edward H (Diane) Hancock 3rd. Her remaining parent, Lisa Hancock of Lynchburg and special niece, Eleanor Wilson and family; nephew, Ricky Godby also remain to mourn. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an educational institution of your choice.

A graveside service celebrating Dell's life will be held on June 26, 2024, at Spring Hill Cemetery located at 3000 Fort Ave., Lynchburg.

I met Dell at Emory and Henry College, we were roommates and continued our friendship for nearly 50 years, talking on the phones, writing letters and visiting when we could. We last spoke April 2024 and had plans to meet up, after I didn´t hear from her I googled her name and found her obituary; my heart is broken There will NEVER be another Dell! I loved her deeply

As an advocate for persons with disabilities Dell was always one who did her best to serve. She was undeniably a great source of comfort to many families.

Growing up in the same neighborhood, I met Dell in the first grade. We went to the same school from 1st grade all the way through High School. It breaks my heart to know that Dell is gone. Losing someone you´ve known all of your life is like losing family because they ARE FAMILY!
Dell had a huge heart with much love for her family, her friends and those that she worked with and cared for.
My sincere condolences to each of you

Dear Dave, Harrison and family members,
It was a privilege to grow up with Dell as a friend. Because we were arranged alphabetically in school, we were always seated next to each other: Hancock, Harper. Dell was always a thoughtful, kind, and generous friend - I never heard her say a bad word about anybody. I was glad to reconnect with her these last few years, and I am so sorry we didn't have more time with her. I offer you my sincerest condolences.
