David Payne Sutor
David Payne Sutor of Lynchburg, Va., died on Monday, October 27, 2025 following an illness of several months. His recent days were spent in hospice care, for which he and his whole family are immensely grateful.
David was born October 14, 1947 in Lynchburg, the second son of six children of Jack Thomas Sutor, Sr. and Jane Ann Payne Sutor. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; younger brother, Adam Sutor of Lynchburg; and his cousins, Kelly Payne Brown of Beverly Hills, Calif. and Richard Payne of Virginia Beach.
David is survived by his sisters, Susan Jackson and Sarah Wood of Lynchburg; and brothers, the Reverend Jack Sutor of Hanover County and Timothy Sutor of Lynchburg; his best friend and companion, Brenda McFarland of Los Angeles; a niece, Piper Tallent (Ryan) of Wilmington, N.C.; nephews, Alex Jackson (Michelle) of Lynchburg, Barrett Jackson of Vero Beach, Fla., Robert Tweed Wood (Stephanie) of Evergreen, Colo.; an uncle, Richard Payne of Jupiter, Fla; and two great-nieces, Claire Jackson and Maeve Wood.
David was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg. He graduated from the School of The Arts from University of North Carolina and of the Whittier School of Law and Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, Calif. He was a faculty member of the Drama School at UNC. He practiced law in Los Angeles, Calif., for fifty years and was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, American Bar Association, Delta Theta Phi, the California Bar, and the Jamestowne Society. He attended All Saints Episcopal Church while living in Toluca Lake, Calif.
David enjoyed kayaking on the James River, remodeling houses, gardening, snow and water skiing, and stand-up comedy. His good sense of humor and talent are among the qualities that endeared him to many friends throughout the USA and Europe.
Burial rites will be scheduled for a future date and inurnment of ashes at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Columbarium.
