Donna Givens Obituary

Donna Cline Givens, 71, of Gladys, Va., passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2023.

Donna was born on October 26, 1951, in Mooresville, N.C., to the late Doris Benson Cline and Joseph Merkson Cline. She was the faithful and loving wife of Richard O. Givens Jr. for nearly 53 years.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Gordon "Sonny" Cline and sister, Melodie Cline Boswell.

She was a faithful member of The Tree of Life Ministry in Lynchburg, Va., and loved facilitating senior bible study.

She began her retail career clerking in her father's country store in Lynch Station, Va. After graduating CVCC with a degree in Merchandising Management she became a market buyer of women's clothing for Leggett Department stores until they merged with Belk and moved their headquarters to Charlotte, N.C. She worked in banking for a few years before returning to retail sales with JC Penney where she held several supervisory positions until retiring in 2015 with nearly 26 years of service.

She enjoyed decorating her home, working in her gardens, tending to her chickens and riding her side-by-side through the woodland trails on their property. But most of all she enjoyed providing a place for family and friends to gather.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Cindy Cline Taylor of Altavista, and Zina Cline Lambert of South Boston; adopted daughter, Norma Verdinella and her husband, John, of Concord; and many nephews and nieces that she loved dearly.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church in Lynch Station by Pastor Mike Dodson and Pastor Don Webb with interment following in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church and other times will be at the residence.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Alan B. Pearson Oncology & Hematology and Centra Hospice for the kind care they provided her.

The family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider the American Cancer Society, 2050 Langhorne Road, Suite 201, Lynchburg, VA 24501.

Richard and family, there are never the right words to say that will ease your grief. I only met Donna once, but the love you two shared was on both your faces. Take comfort in your memories and family and your strength will carry you through.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. The Cline family at White Rock is a favorite childhood memory as we grew up together. What a time we had when the Icee machine was introduced to us and we were so excited when Granny (Eliza Patterson) would give us a quarter to walk to the store. we then sat on the white rock and enjoyed our summertime treat. Joe and Doris and the whole family were so good to my Granny. So sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure of knowing Donna while we worked together at Jcpenneys. Also for being her hairstylist at the same time. But most of all, she was my friend. Even in her illness she had a smile on face and praised our Lord all the time . I will miss her greatly.
