Edward Layne Obituary

Edward Leslie Layne "Pat", 82, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born on May 24, 1941 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Rev. Randall and Gertrude Layne. He was also preceded in death by his brother, RC Layne; and a sister, Jane Davis.

Pat was an avid lover of all things involving sports and participated in many throughout the years. Many times the neighborhood children would knock on the door and ask if Pat could come outside and play ball. He relished the invitation and always tried to offer suggestions to improve their game. Prior to his retirement, Pat was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of the Baptist faith and loved singing along and listening to gospel music.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Judy Layne; daughters Melanie Fears (Bennie) and Ann Eubank (Matt); his beloved grandchildren, Bradley Huddleston, Jordan Fears, Leah Fears, Devin Shepherd and Kendall Shepherd; and two sisters, Mary Campbell and Martha Arrowood (Butch).

A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastor Norman "Mickey" Ryan.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m at the funeral home.

I´ve always thought a lot about Pat over the years. And the last time I seen him was 2017 when I came home to bury my brother. I was one of those kids that he was always good to me in the neighborhood. A very good man and I will miss him deeply.

My condolences to Pat's family and friends, I have wonderful memories of him as a young athlete, who excelled in whatever sport he played from baseball, and basketball to football, I recall him punting a football when he was barefooted and it would travel over the length & height of T.C.Miller School. Pat could compete with the very best athletes. Sincerely, Mel Parker
