Frederick R. Burton, Sr.

Frederick R. Burton, Sr. of Rustburg, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the age of 77. Fred was born in Altavista, VA, on February 8, 1948, the eldest son of the late Robert Withers Burton and Virginia Taylor Burton, and is preceded in death by his brother, Ashby Paul.

Fred served his country as a jet engine mechanic during the Vietnam War, stationed at Loring Air Force Base, Loring, Maine, and in the Air Force Reserve in Sandston, VA.

He avidly enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and was a consummate outdoorsman. He loved people, and expressed that through serving in the church as a Sunday school teacher and a trustee for Clearview Baptist Church, where he was a member. He accomplished many things during his time here with us, but most important to him was what he provided for his family.

Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda D. Burton; sons, Frederick Robert, Jr. (Kim), and Ray Withers (Kari); daughters, Jennifer Leigh Burton (David Griffith), and Melanie Monroe (Tony); siblings, Steven C. (Janet), and Wilbur L. (Jackie).

The legacy of his life is further imparted upon 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and will be missed.

A celebration of Fred's life will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, with Pastor Tim Dooley officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at Heritage Funeral Service.
