Harry L. Smith Sr.

Harry L. Smith Sr., 78, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, Dec.8, 2010, at home. Harry was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Jewell Ridge to Olive May and Lee Wallace Smith and was the beloved husband of Doris Ann Smith. He was preceded by two sisters, Juanita J. Jessee and Roberta M. Helton.

In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his son Harry L. Smith Jr., of Philadelphia, Pa.; brothers Walter B. Smith Youngstown, Ohio, Robert D Smith Richlands and Kenneth D. Smith, Okeechobee, Fla. Daughter-in-Law Sandra L. Smith and grandchildren, Josiah D. Smith, Carly N. Smith, Adam M. Smith and Bryan J. Smith, all of Philadelphia.

Harry was a member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Amherst Monroe Ruritan Club for 12 years, President of the Amherst Monroe Ruritan Club and a past district governor. During his dedicated and loyal work he earned the distinct Tom Downing Fellow award for his unselfish personal effort in support of the Ruritan Foundation. In addition, he was also a member of the Masons Sulgrave Lodge in Youngstown earning his 32nd degree while serving as a member and leader of the escort guard.

Harry started his professional career employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Corp.and then retired from LTV Steel Corporation. While working for LTV Steel Corp. as a service engineer he received his certificate in Metallurgy of Iron and Steel from Youngstown State University in 1963.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Harry's home health care nurses and physical therapists for their loving and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Calling hours and a memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at the Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road. Calling hours will be from 12:30 to 2p.m. followed by a memorial service in the Heritage Funeral Service. The burial will be held at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield, Ohio.
