Herb Winegard
Herb Winegard, 73, originally of Levittown, NY passed away peacefully after long illness, at home, in Lynchburg, VA surrounded by his loving wife and family. Herb built a life that was defined by intelligence, kindness, and humor. Herb attended undergraduate SUNY Stoney Brook graduating in 1974 with a physics degree. He subsequently attended Washington University Law School in St. Louis graduating in 1977, passing the NY State Bar in 1978. He was a gifted contracts lawyer who worked for the nuclear industry first for BWX in Canton, OH and later coming to Lynchburg to work for Framatome before transferring to Charlotte, NC as Principal Attorney. He and Pam returned to Lynchburg to finish off a stellar 40 years in the legal department before retiring in 2020. Considered a mentor in his field, he as often described as a "Lawyer's Lawyer" and was held in great regard by friends and colleagues. Herb enjoyed participating in synagogue life and was an active brotherhood member as well as a frequent volunteer in the community. His humor and easy-going nature was valued greatly by all who knew him.
Herb had a great fondness for classic Perry Mason and in the final year of his life set up a challenge to watch the first five seasons as often as he could. He made it to 34.5 runs convincing his family that he should be in the Guiness Book of World Records. His "spirit animal" was Disney Goofy and in 2020, he and Pam spent 14 glorious days at Disney World and a Wish cruise meeting every iteration of Goofy possible with the love being reciprocated to his great delight by each and every Goofy. Infamous for his dad jokes and nicknames, he passes that tradition on to his sons and son-in-laws. He has an amazing addiction to dark chocolate in almost every form but his favorite was dark chocolate cashews, Pam is still finding stashes of this delicacy throughout the house.
He was always a wonderful, loving family man and is survived by his beloved wife, Pam, who together, hand-in-hand, built a life of love, family and shared deep commitment and love to each other. She will miss him forever. In addition, Herb's legacy includes his children, Denise (Mark) Kremnitzer, Daniel Winegard (Amanda), Julie (Ian) Aiken and his step-children, Joshua (Jenny) Tyler, Steven (Sarah) Tyler, and Molley (Santos) Perez. He also leaves behind his adored and loved grandchildren; Stuart, Asher, Edward, Archer, Ezra, Lilliana, Oliver and Baby Girl Aiken. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Dr. Sandra (Sandy) Hankin of Sunrise, FL and his "baby" sister, Dr. Elaine Winegard (David Sadler). He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
