Mabel Humphreys Obituary

Mabel Gweneth Humphreys, 94, of Westminster Canterbury, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at her residence.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia on Oct. 22, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Richard Humphreys and Mabel Jane Thomas Humphreys.
Dr. Humphreys education included a Bachelors Degree from the University of British Columbia, a Masters Degree from Smith College and her Doctorate from the University of Chicago. She taught for 13 years at the H. Sophie Newcomb College Institute at Tulane University.
Dr. Humphreys was a professor of math with Randolph Macon Woman's College from 1949 until her retirement in 1980. Dr. Humphreys, The Gillie A. Larew and Charles A. Dana, Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. She was a member of the Committee of Undergraduate Program in Mathematics and a visiting lecturer of the Mathematical Association of America.
Dr. Humphreys was a former member of the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trails Club and in the past was an avid hiker.
She is survived by her friends and other retirees from Randolph Macon Woman's College.
A celebration of Gweneths life will be held at 2 p.m Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, in the Weissert Chapel at Westminster Canterbury with the Rev. Karen Joy Kelly officiating.
