Michael Curtis McCormack
September 29, 1948 - November 6, 2025
Michael Curtis McCormack, 77, of Amherst, VA passed away on November 6, 2025. He was the son of the late Wilson Curtis McCormack, Jr. and Betty Jane Mize McCormack.
Mike was born on September 29, 1948, in Roanoke, VA. He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem in 1966, and later graduated from Virginia Tech in 1971, earning a civil engineering degree while working with Virginia Department of Transportation on a co-op program. Upon graduation he continued working with VDOT until his retirement as the resident engineer of Amherst County.
Mike was an avid hiker who volunteered with the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club where he held many jobs and responsibilities such as President, trail maintainer and hike leader. He was also involved with Adopt-A-Highway and for several years would drive homebound residents to Mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He and his daughter enjoyed visiting the Humane Society of Lynchburg where he was known to adopt a pet or two.
Mike was an accomplished artist, encompassing all mediums. Painting in oils, as well as pen and ink were his favorites. He loved painting landscapes of Amherst County.
Mike was an avid golfer, happiest in the company of his golfing friends. On rare occasions, he would drive by a random golf course and feel the wheel begin to steer in the direction of the entrance.
Mike is survived by his children, David McCormack and Sarah McCormack and her husband, Ryan; former wife and great friend, Liz McCormack; grandchild, Matthew McCormack; his sister, Patricia Sheets and her husband, Curtis; multiple nieces and nephews and many loving friends in the community.
He was predeceased by his son, Marc McCormack and his brother, Gary McCormack.
A Celebration of Michael's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A public visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Appalachian Trail Conservancy or the Lynchburg Human Society.
